Select by color range, or did you use the magnetic lasso tool?
I would _not_ recommend following the color adjustment advice on that link.

I love those pics like that. Did you increase the saturation on the clown layer. Also try running the unsharp mask on the layer in the foreground. Heres a pic I did of my cat. I have actually sold a few of these
