Top Causes of Browning

It is a strange thing, random corals browning. I have a tank filled with some beautiful SPS. Loads of good color, but I've got a certain piece that I bought from another reefer about a year ago. It was blue/purple when I bought it, browned out rather quickly, and never recovered. It has grown a lot. I've moved it to a couple of different places over the year, right now it's in a place with less light and more flow. I think it's getting darker brown now.

It just seems to happen. Personally I think its Phosphate, although I run GFO all the time, changing it regularly, I do have a lot of dirt in my sump. Got to clean it out.

My opinions... I just think different corals come from different areas of the reef...

You have to find thier sweet spot.. But this can be difficult.

I have had many wild frags not color up for at least a year...

Then some other problems that I have are some corals grow FASTER than others... so they grow into the path and flow of the other corals cutting down flow.

I have some issues with my microthalma and my pink birdsnest running wild all over the tank... I think I am going to get a hacksaw in there :)

FRANKYSREEF - if you decide to do some fragging, I live in So Cal area as well, and I work in Redundo Beach. I'll be happy to pay some $ for some frags from you. Let me know.
Thanks

I'm gonna be home most of the day, so you can call me at 949-933-3048 and set up a time, late morning early afternoon is best.
How much are you thinking about buying...

I have to see them w/ my eyes to know which one's to pick, but based on your pics, there's a bunch that I'd be interested in, especially if you make good deal for large purchases. I can definitely come in on sat morning. How about noon Saturday?

It's easy to burn $200 on nice frags... some of these have been growing on plugs for 2 mos also..

I have a t5 frag tank.. I will be fragging and working on the tank on sat also.

So noon on sat is fine with me.

I'll pm you directions.

225 gal visio tank, 60 gal fuge/frag tank, bout 80 species of coral, large large colonies.
4 250 watt mh 20 k helios, 6500 k natural sunlight 4 hrs a day.

semi closed loop system, with 4 seios for flow 50x turnover.
Large calc reactor, auto top off system, 1.4 hp chller.

My corals grow like mad... I rarely buy from wholesalers... so noo pests.. Been busy so havent had time to frag much, have about 30 frags right now..

FSOL only bought two BIG frags, microthalma.. probaly best for his system..Microthalma grow like weeds along with monti caps.. Some of my acropora grow very fast..

My growth just slowed a bit when I dropped the MH to 8 hrs a day from 10. ( electric bill was a killin me )

I changed my flow with my semi closed loop and my big tabling yellow mille rtn'd on me.. No worries for I have 5 frags, but it still sucks.. I will be moving the purple slimer to its position anyway. More valuable coral anyway..

We'll see how the semi closed loop system works, corals seem to like it, but anytime I change anything something is always unhappy... :) It is definitly more random flow.

I created this new system for I have 3600 gph dolphin , and it was running through an old manifold system that just didnt disperse the flow that well, the new system runs the length of the tank in the back, with 3.4 inch pvc 4 t's 2 90's and 2 45's with a reducer to 1/2 inch to pump up pressure.

It may be a little ugly, but it will get covered in coralline pretty quick and stopped my flooding problem whne the power shuts off so my wife is happy..

The corals are a little upset with me right now... 2 have browned out on me a little bit, but saving electricity is the priority right now.. I used to run 2 skimmers, but I am now down to 1 for the motor broke on the other one :) doesnt seem to matter, the older the tanks get the more filtration seems to be created by the corals themselves...

The browning could also be due to a little temp drop, from 82 to 78 - 80 .. I added 2 cooling fans to stop my chiller from coming on.

Any other questions lemme know
