I have a 75 gallon tank cycling with some live rock, domino damsels and two gobies for the mean time before i get my octo. But i am wondering what kind of tops or locks i am gunna need right now i have a versa top with strip on it. There is a decent amount of space in the back for the protein skimmer and the skimmer box which might be a problem. Any suggestions?

I don't even use a top with my bimacs. That's just me though, I'm not necessarily recommending that you do the same.

Several times I've watched them (while exploring/hunting) eventually climb up the side of the glass to the water's surface, then stick a tentacle out of the water, then retreat down. They are totally disinterested in leaving the water (they seem afraid to try it), based on what I've seen. I'm willing to take the risk, however. If I covered it up, my tank would get too warm (and oxygen levels would plummet). I have no heater, and already it is a constant 76-degrees. I may invest in a chiller. Just my two-cents. No flaming by adamant cover-users! ;)

So i guess my glass versa top should be fine then. Is there anyway i can check for oxygen levels? How long did you wait on untill you put your octopuss in?

A little trick I know If you don't want to worry about it escaping or walking across you'r carpet in the middle of the night line the top of your tank with astro turf you can secure it with hot glue for a permanent stay or with velcro for a temp. stay they don't like the way it feels when they put their tenticals on it and go back in the tank. Hope this helps you out good luck! Abatefish

its not that they dont like it; they can get a grip on it... but that only works if the octo cant simply reach over it, easier in large public display tanks than at home
