torch coral problems ??

i got a torhc coral yesterday free from my LFS.
it was really really shrivvled after acclimitising and then opened up a bit overnight so the polyps ?(sp) were about 1" long now it has shrivvled up again ?
is this normal ?

It is hard to know what could possibly be the issue without knowing things such as your water parameters, lighting conditions, flow, placement in the tank etc.
IME many types of Euphyllia sp. don't demand large amount of flow as it can tear their tissue when expanded (so they stay receded). Just enough flow to keep the tentacles moving ought to be good in my opinion.
I am also assuming your water quality and parameters are all in check, and that you have sufficient lighting over your tank.
Beyond that, just give it another day or two and take it from there.

its under 2 x 18w compact T5's.
placed middle top(ish) of the tank. with medium flow. its hard to get it in a spot in a nano thats good.
i may moove it to the bottom of the tank. but im worried light wont be strong enough down there. ? any ideas ?

as for flow theres a koralia nano. and a fluval 405 canister return in the tank

My torch does very well at the bottom of the tank. It does like low to moderate flow. The first couple of days it would recede, so yours may need a couple of days to acclimate.

it is opnening up more and more. the tank params are as follows last night :

ph - 8.2
SG - 1.024
temp - 79.9*f
amonia - 0
nitrites - 0
nitrates- 0

i dont have calcium or alkalinity tests yet. i have them ordered though

i am suplimenting stronotium and coral trace

It is probably simply a bit upset from the move. I would not put it in a high amount of flow, something low to moderate. I would also make sure there are not too many corals close to it as torch corals are quite aggressive.

yeh. its the only coral in the tank at the moment. heres a FTS so u can see where it is placed. ( bad pic taken with my mobile sorry )

also. i have to ask. but the freaky white, net sorta thing that comes out the middle of the coral. ( haha ) i asume is the mouth ? sorry i sound stupid. this is my 1st coral

it's getting used to the new environment. be patient and observant. if it keeps itself closed up you may need to move it to a different location.

where else could it go though. ive already re-scaped once to get good flow for it . and the only other option is the floow. and i cnt rescape much as i sliced 2" of my finger at work today nd got 6 stiches ( im a chef ) so im a bit tied up. lol

see that rock on the bottom left of that pic you posted? it looks like there's a ledge right there that you could put it on. you would probably wanna readjust that koralia so that it wasn't getting blasted but that could be done easily enough. maybe turn it so that it flows across the back of the tank? this looks like a cube tank to me. is it? anyway, it's all dependent on what the coral looks like in a day or two. if it opens up, beautiful! leave it alone. if not, it would be good to have some thoughts for what to do already in mind. good luck!

yeh. the ledge should be ok on the left. thanx it still hasnt opened up anymore... 2 days on. ill give it till tommorow then moove it i rekon corals are a pain in the arse. even if they do look nice

this morning the corals freaky white mouth in the middle isnt comming out at all. is this bad... or am i just paranoid/over-worried at the mo ??

My torch gets way more flow then that and opens up huge. Perhaps the clown is keeping it shortened?

My guess is the clownfish is keeping it very nervous, and possibly well-fed enough it's not looking for food...it will relax eventually, granted that's a mild-mannered clown.

ALso always watch your alkalinity with lps. s/b 8.3-9.3 for comfort.
