New to keeping lps, i'm having success with a duncan so far as well as some softies, I would like to add one of these to the tank but I would like some info on how hard they are to care fore and how successful people have been with them. I know to keep him distant from the other coral in my tank, he will have his own corner. I plan on keeping him on the bottom right of my tank, about 16 inches from the surface of the water, he will be under a photon 48 reefbreeders led. Also, will I have to worry about any inhabitants getting eaten by him? say a fish or peppermint shrimp? Also, will my little red starfish have any issues if he gets to close?

Usually a healthy torch at your LFS will be a pretty hardy coral. Not too picky as long as you don't hammer it with flow it should be fine. They can sometimes sting nearby corals usually chalices and acans IME.

As long as they are fairly hardy thats the only thing I wanted to know about them. everything will be about 10-12 inches away from him, I guess what I wanted to know is how tolerant of the tank chemistry can they be, the only issue i'm having with my tank that i will sort out before i get one is my phosphates sitting at .20ppm. No ammonia, nitrites, nitrates are at about 2.5ppm, I haven't gotten a reef test kit yet but I do weekly water changes with a good trusted brand for the trace, calcium and so on. I don't want to pick one up and worry that i may lose it as well as my investment. Also, if it splits and grows another head, can that head be removed from the colony and placed elsewhere?

LPS like torches and frogspawn are typically pretty tolerant of not-perfect water...some would argue they even grow better in those conditions
