torch dying?

Ok, so yesterday I bought a torch coral from the LFS. I acclimated it for 30 minutes and then it opened up after about 10 minutes of being in the tank. Then last night when the lights went off it closed up and I figured 'its night i guess it closes at night' then this afternoon when I got home it was still closed.. I checked the tank and the ph is at 8.2 and nitrates are 0 temp is 80.1 and all the other fish and corals are fine. The other coral is 2 sps a mushroom and a ricordia. What could be wrong?

You could probably keep it under the halides if you have any way of moving it into a less-lit area (shade it with some rock or move it lower). You could also slowly introduce it to the MH, running them for just a little bit (an hour or two), giving it a break for awhile, then burn the halides for progressively longer intervals, judging by the reaction of the torch.

You should definitely give it more time before you get really concerned.

One more thing, I also bought two sps from the lfs, they were both browned out so I put them pretty high up on my reef. One turned purple and the other turned green.Does that mean that they did fine and dont need to be light acclimated? Or should I move them down and work them up the reef?

Yeah, sps sound fine, but I'm not an sps kinda guy so I could be wrong. All euphyllias (torch, frogspawn, hammer, etc.) close up (at least a little) when the lights go out. They can be kind of moody, and if they aren't totally satisfied with where you put them, the light, the water quality, etc. they may take awhile to open up, and even then may not fully extend.

what kind of flow does it have. i know mine opens up real well with little flow. but stayed closed when i had med to high flow in that area.

I think you need to give it some more time.

You should also be aware that corals get used to a lighting schedule. If you're turning the light on and off at various times, it will get confused. Stick to a regular schedule, and it will open/close with the lighting.

I have had a torch in my 40 gal for about a year now. i went through the same thing at first. mine is placed in the middle of the reef. i have a 250w 20k mh. some nights it closes and some nights it's fully open with its sweepers. watch out for those sweepers!!! don't place it too close because it has damaged A LOT in my tank. just give it time and it should be fine.
