Torch Problem

I recently purchased a torch and it was out..but recently he hasnt been out at all and this morning it appears that there is a brown like skin? have done some reading and discovered brown jelly disease? Could this be my problem? or something else? because it looks like my hammer is starting to get this look as well?..Are there distinctions that tell me the coral is actually dead?

I just did an iodine dip..how affective is this method? and how often should it be done..does anyone have any experience with brown jelly disease?

if i remember correctly, brown jelly is very bad and can spread to other corals. i would do a search on the subject if no one chimes in as if i am correct, many more of you corals could be in danger. i wish i could offer more insight but i have yet to deal with it (knock on wood). good luck.

to answer your question though, brown jelly is a highly contagious disease that effects alot of LPS's. once your torch head gets it, remove the colony if possible and just break off the infected head, then discard in the outside grass piles. i have NEVER tried to save an infected head as 1)the heads will eventually grow back & 2) not worth the expense of infecting other lps's

if it were me, i would discard the torch head and discard the hammer head as well.

ok thank you soo much..what if all the heads seem to have this disease? am i screwed? by dipping the coral..will the heads come backs? or are they done ?

whenever i have gotten BJD, i have discarded all diseased heads. hammers and torches reproduce heads so quickly that in due time, you will never know a difference. if you are determined to keep them and want to try a dip, i would take them out asap and put into a quarantine tank. if you don't have one, buy one. all reefers should have a quarantine tank anyway. torches and hammers, when compared to other lps's, are a couple of the cheapest to buy and to replace. the risk, and sometimes effort, is not worth the deaths of other lps's. something else to think about, that if $ is an issue and you don't have a quarantine tank and you don't have the $ to buy a qt, lights, filter, etc... then what I would do is say a prayer and part ways quick, fast and in a hurry.

just to clarify though....when you say a "brown like skin".....brown jelly disease looks like exactly what the name says.....it's a light brown, jellylike disease. if you move the head around in the tank, like you're trying to swish the stuff off, then that is how it spreads

now, hammers are known to get an inflated bubble (big inflated bubble, can't miss it) in the middle of their heads. this is a sign of reproduction. this is not contagious, so it doesn't seem like this is what's going on as your hammers and torch has it....but i just want you to know the difference in the two.

there are lots of pics out there of BJD. if you can't post a pic, i'd look around to see if this is exactly what you have

ok thanks scapes..il get on the quarantine tank tomorrow =/..as soon as i can..well thats not good cuz then i have definitely spread it..and i have almost only LPS..so great..But thanks for your help soo much..yeah its definitely BJD..i just hope it will go away..but knowing my luck it wont..thanks everyone!
