Toronto LFS - someone rescue 'em clams!

Hello all,

I think they have 10 Crocea clams ranging in size.

They're only getting regular florescent light. To make matters worse, the poor little wee on in the side of the tank is barely getting anything. Almost like getting 'candle light dinner' illumination. Mantles on all clams super extended, the in siphon pretty much closed on all the clams. All things considered, looks okay now, but they won't have a future if nobody goes in and buy 'em soon. I haven't been to this LFS in 2 weeks. Thus, 2 weeks max under these poor lighting conditions. I'm pretty sure it came from the local wholesaler that uses MHs.

I'm not a clam expert, but I would say if nobody buys 'em for another 2 weeks, and if someone does, it would be a bad experience.

Oh well... I'm not trying to flame (so PM if you really want to know where)... Just that I see 10 good clams that will not last long if nobody bothers to buy 'em. Hate to see one of the most beautiful sea creatures die b/c of lack of light.

Sorry, I didn't buy one. My bad... #1 reason is because I just stocked up on 7 clams a few weeks ago. Hmm.. I guess it's useless to even post this message (except to complain). If they sell 'em all, they will just restock 'em again. Oh well... Catch-22.

Well, if people buy them, he'll just restock more clams in the poor lighting. He'll probably order more clams since he thinks the demand is so great. You can't win in this situations, perhaps you can educate the LFS owner about the clams. I think people should boycott this LFS.

Jimbo: I agree (as mentioned in my last paragraph). I'm sure they know it's poor lighting... Some of their other locations are doing the right thing and others do not. This one in particular, does not usually carry healthy marine fish too! This location has been around for at least 15yrs. I'm pretty sure they just don't care, IMO.

I disagree. They won't restock if nobody buy them if they loosing 15 dollars (at least) a pop, if they restock, they are dump and will go out of business. They will think clams are hard to keep.
i recommend no rescuse in this case unless you get the owner to sell for less than what he buy them for. IME, This is OK for some coral, even some fish but never rescuse a clam. By the time the owner see that the clam is going down hill and sell them for a lost, the clam is certain to die in a few days.
They all keep the clams at low light level because the mantle will be hyperextened, which make the clam looks healthy to them and to most buyers.
Guys, don't touch thes clams unless there is an absolutly outstanding clam. They you will have to pay full price for it.

yea I guess that would make sense but thats what one of the lfs does... I see dead clams that no one buys and then next week theres new ones...oh well I'd hope not every store does that....

oh maybe some people are buy just enough to make it worth while either way it sucks

Usually, they got some clams in, many got sold right away (the most beautiful ones) The one that did not sell will stay until they die. The LFS already got their profit, thus will order more. Here in Corpus, the nice clams are sold that day. I know when they got shipment is, like many other reefers. When I am looking for something, I always come in on shipment days.
BTW, the store here in Corpus keep clams in their show tank with MH light. Many clams stay there for months and growing in there. It is too bad that their price is a little high. They rarely have nice clams in however.
