TOTM, living w/ aefw and managing, or avoiding all together?

Are these beautiful SPS tanks living with AEFW and managing it (wrasses)? Or, do they avoid it all together?
I see a lot of tank builds where people just buy huge frag packs of sps and throw them in their tank (maybe dip them first). Seems many do this without any problem. Now, I know nobody wants to admit to to having "bugs." Do you think they might have "bug," but just dont admit it?

depends.

some have AEFW and live with it.

some dont have it.

if you buy frags [small] from ppl who are honest, and dip them, then there is no need for you to end up with AEFW ...

if you buy maricultured stuff from me, then there is a good chance you introduce AEFW eggs which are on the plug or ... .

Many TOTM articles mention dealing with AEFW and other pests; most seem to just "manage it." I do not see TOTM threads mentioning previous "tank tear-downs" due to pests.

While I'm not a TOTM (nor any where close). I have been living with AEFW for 2.5 years. (from nov '10 according to my photos)

My tank is doing fine despite it. Good growth, ok colours. It just wasn't worth the risk of a full tear down to dip everything, or something like a levinsole in tank treatment. The process of AEFW actually consuming your corals doesn't happen overnight. As long as you learn to recognize the signs of AEFW in your corals (change in colour, bite marks, etc). You can take appropriate measure.

Basting, fish, and the occasional dip keep things in check. It just adds an extra layer of complexity to your system. You have to stay on top of basting your tank with a turkey baster + maxijet on a regular basis. As long as you have fish that will eat them when they float free be it wrasses, clowns, damsels, or any fish you can keep them in check.

I tried a lot of wrasses over the years and I could never pin point if they were helping w/out me basting first and with my tank the size that it was one by they picked each other off until I only have my melarious which kept going down the overflow so is now in the frag tank.

With that said I do want them gone. I rarely buy new corals anymore so I'm not worried about reinfection and I don't like having to stick my hands in the tank anymore then I need to. When I cut my water changes back from weekly to 2-3 weeks I've had a harder time keeping a proper basting routine and have seen a rise in population. (The lack of wrasses in the DT may have something to do with it as well but I can't be sure). In turn I've gotten more aggressive with dippings as there are some new dips on the market that aren't as harsh on the corals so there is less risk in dipping.

I think I probably had them in my tank before anyone, myself included, ever heard of them. I manage them with a turkey baster, and an occasional dip if required. I have some sps that I have never found a single AEFW on. Some sps resist for years then suddenly become infested. Some get them once and then I never see them on it again.
I'm hoping the new All Out product turns out to work well. I still won't tear down my tank, but selling frags will become a lot easier.

Same deal with me. I have 4-5 pieces that seem to be targets and they tend to ignore the rest. I leave them in their as litmus tests as I'd rather them have a few favorites for them to snack on then have them decide to branch out to other pieces. I've got fingers crossed in regards to All Out as well. I finally broke down last week and pulled any piece that has ever shown signs of bites off the rocks and dipped them.

I know that I dipped every single SPS in my tank (SPS only tank) with Bayer Advanced Complete for 15 min. and still got flatworms. They aren't AEFW's, but still, if it exists, it's going to get into your tank at some point I guess. I've purchase Levisomol, but I'm still trying to determine whether I'll use it or not since they're not on any of my corals, only on my glass it seems.

Wait what? You are thinking of doing a levinsole dip for normal flatworms?! (Not AEFW) Just use flatworm exit. Why risk your entire tank?!

there are 2 things with AEFW ...

one, is that since these pests are well documented now, everyone thinks they have it when something doesnt go right ... I have had calls from ppl with soft corals saying " oh man i got the AEFW, all my corals are dying and i cant do nothing" LOLOL it has became the new "excuse" almost for poor reef keeping practices ...

second, ppl not realizing the difference ... other flatworms have no Issues, and can be removed within a week with a wrasse ... any wrasse...

I hear ya guys. I'm not freaking out or worrying about my tank. My growth and color is phenomenal. I fully understand these are not AEFW's, and in a tank with nothing but acros to boot. That is why I haven't treated the tank with anything yet. I do have an Exquisite wrasse in there, but he doesn't seem to take any notice of them that I can see. Regardless, I'm not worried, only making the point about dipping and tank inhabitants that occur regardless of what you use to dip. :)

I read most of them and a lot of them talk about how they had battles with pests. I would think most learned the hard way like I did.
