tricky question. I have had them touch before without and issue but there are quite a few fungias and similar species out there. I would actually put them close together while you can watch and look for signs of stinging. One issue is that fungias tend to move overnight so you may place them far enough apart and then all of a sudden wake up and find them touching in the morning. You would want to know if stinging is a problem prior to allowing it to happen overnight...
