Transferring question

I'm wanting to transfer my fish to my 40b. It's been around 3 weeks, but if I move the sponge that's sitting in the tank with the fish to the other tank, will it be ok to put all the fish in at once?

Yes, but the other tank,30g, has been up around 5 months and all I did with that was took a sponge that was sitting in my 65g and plopped it in. It originally was a qt that turned into a permanent tank because I didn't want to overcrowd my 65. I have to make room for my 225 that putting up so I need to tear down the 30 to make room. I just wasn't sure since there's no liverock or sand in the 30, but there is in the 40, if thar effect the sponge in a bad way. I couldn't see why it would, but I just wanted to check before I through everybody over. If there was a cycle I missed it. I tested in the beginning and ammonia and nitrates were 0, then I tested again today and both are reading 0. There's a piece of red monti in there that's survived these passed two weeks so I would assume it went through some type of cycle. Although I haven't seen a lot of dynos either so that's why I'm worried that it hasn't cycled, but wasnt sure if I through the sponge in that it wouldn't matter.

Using a sponge, in a HOB , that has been in the flow of an established tank for a while is an excellent way to instantly cycle a QT or HT. How many fish are going in? Be ready with an ammonia-neutralizer (Ammo-Lock, et al) and ready to do water changes if water shows ammonia. If there is a way you can spread populating over several days (assuming more than a couple of fish) thats better.

There's 9 fish. 6 chromis, two skunks, and an OSFF. I could do it over several days, but won't taking out the sponge of the 30 with fish still in it be bad?

I'm lost. Is the 30 still going to have fish? What other bio-filtration do you have in the 30, LR, etc?

Lol. Ok. You said to move over the fish over several days from my 30g to my 40g. I'm assuming I would have moved my sponge from my 30g to my 40g. My question was, if I did this, wouldn't the 30g suffer from not having a sponge, but still having fish? The 30g only had the sponge and a HOB filter for filtration and a fake coral for comfort for the fish for hiding. There was one piece of LR with anemones also. The 40g has a little bit of LR, 15 lbs, and 40 lbs of live sand. It has a sump with some chaeto in it.

If you move the sponge, you're also moving the only source of bio-filtration so move it to the new tank. I assume the sponge is in a HOB filter or has water flow. Watch ammonia in the new tank closely and you should be able to move all the fish at once. A seasoned HOB filter will do a good job with ammonia/nitrite. Be sure PH, temp, and SG are about the same in both tanks and just toss the fish in. If there is much difference in these parameters, acclimate more slowly. I'd still be concerned about the cycle status in the new tank, if you keep the old one set up a while, you can always move them back if ammonia climbs. If that isn't practical, be sure to have an ammonia-neutralizer (Ammo-Lock, Prime, etc.) on hand and be prepared to do lots of water changes.

I transferred last night and everything went smoothly. Checked ammonia this morning before I left and all was good. I plan on monitoring it for a while though just to be sure. I do have some amquel and usually have 30g of water ready to change. I just got a new ro/di so I was in the middle of breaking that in last night. Almost full so it all good. I do 15g wc every week on the 65 and the 30, but I tore the 30 down last night as well. I still plan on doing 15g on the 40 as well. Thanks for the help!
