Treating my Clown for Brook :(

Hey guys,
So 3 days ago I noticed one of my Clownfish had a white slime substance growing on him. He was eating and acting normal, but I recognized it immediately as Brooklynella. I've never encountered it before, but i've researched so many fish diseases that I recognized it. Luckily I was able to net the fish and put him into a QT I have set-up to run constantly. I've been pretty sad about it because I tend to get pretty attached to my fish. Anyways, I didn't have any formalin or other formaldehyde medication so I went ahead and ordered some online (no place sold it in my area). I was concerned he wouldn't survive in time for the medication to get here as Brook tends to be very quickly progressing and can kill a victim in a day or two, so I began treatment with Instant Ocean's "LifeGuard".
The next morning I woke up pretty early and checked on the fish. His tail fin had started deteriorating pretty bady and looked frayed. However the white slime looked as if it was improving. Today is day 3 of treatment, and i'm a bit surprised. All of the white slime is gone, and his tail fin looks better. It's not frayed out anymore and looks to be healing. I'm hoping that this LifeGuard will work just long enough for the formalin to get here.

Has anyone ever used LifeGuard before for Brook? What was the results? I also would love to hear other's experience treating and dealing with Brook on any of their fish. Should I do anything to my DT to prevent a future outbreak? I have already done a 40% water change over 2 days, vacuuming the sand bed the best I could. It pains me to see this fish in the HT all by himself, so I hope he gets better soon.

Formalin is the only thing that helps - don't fool around with any other stuff if you want to save your fish.

So your saying it's better to do nothing at all unless I have Formalin? I am well aware that only Formalin is proven effective against Brook, but I'm not gonna stick him in a QT and watch him deteriorate for 5-9 days (most likely be dead in 3) while I wait for the shipment. At least I'm doing something in the meantime. He has actually improved a great deal since he's been in QT. All visible signs of the infection are gone and he's eating and acting normal.

That is why you should have it hand for the next quarantine occurrence. Formalin is good stuff, and it's good to plan ahead. You may lose him if it is Brook, but I hope he will be ok.

Freshwater dips could help, but are unlikely to cure it.

I would never again buy a clownfish without having formalin on hand.

He is doing much better. All the visible signs of the infection are gone and his tail is beginning to heal. The Formalin should be here today so I will begin treatment with that. I guess it's my fault for not having every medication for every possible disease or illness ahead of time. I have a drawer full of meds, I just didn't have that one. I was hoping to get some insight into the questions I asked, not really looking to be made to feel more guilty about my sick fish.

There's no reason to feel guilty! You are doing the right thing. I would have never known about using formalin correctly if I hadn't come to this site. The people on here are so helpful.

As for a medicine cabinet, I keep Fishvet 37% formalin, kanamycin, and prazipro. Metronidazole and methylene blue are also in there because I raise freshwater angelfish and they are prone to hexamita and fungus sometimes. I also have Seachem Stressguard, and Prime. I've been thinking of adding chloroquine phosphate to the cabinet, but I've never used it before and I'm not sure where to find a quality supplier for it.

Let us know how it turns out! Two new clowns from LA came in last Friday and one refuses to eat. They are going through TTM now and I may have to formalin dip them again.

Just a quick update in case any of you were curious. My clown (his name is Dopple btw) is doing MUCH better! The Formalin came in a couple days ago so I started treatment right away. No visible signs of Brook and his tail is regrowing very quickly. I know he will be happy to get back to the DT and so will I, but I am keeping him in the HT for another week or so.

I know many will disagree with this, but I am convinced that the "LifeGuard" medication I used while I was waiting for the shipment of Formalin saved Dopple from dying. While it didn't cure the Brook, I think it may have slowed it and cleared it up enough so that his immune system could fight it just long enough for the Formalin to get here. It's my understanding that Brooklynella is a very fast progressing illness and can often kill a fish in just a couple days, where as Dopple went almost 6 days in the HT before the Formalin got here.

At any rate, i'm thrilled to see my fish getting better.

Good to hear the fish is recovering!

I'm not disagreeing that LiveGuard may have helped. Brooklynella usually causes also secondary bacterial infections and keeping those down is definitely beneficial.
Actually, in case of an active Brooklynella infection I would suggest to medicate the hospital tank with antibiotics in addition to the formalin baths.

Amoxicillin (fishmox) worked for me, but other antibiotics may work as well.

I am trying to buy some formalin. I live in Canada and it's hard to get. So I'm looking at Amazon.com.
Is Paragard the same thing? If not, what brand of Formalin should I look for?
