Only 1/4 tspn of the buffered c from Iherb. These are in a 150 gal so it's about 5ppm. I've not bumped up the dosage either.

I just realized that I'm suppose to remove all activated carbon, etc while dosing. How necessary is that? Only reason I'm asking as I've left my skimmer on, filter sock on and carbon in the tank. I would assume they would remove the vit C faster than typical. Does it really matter?

My water is super cloudy and my ALK is 15. I started mixing water for a water change. I did a water change on Thursday and the cloudiness has gotten worst since then. Anyone have any other suggestions. My Ph is at 8.15 and all other levels are at zero. I don't know what my Cal is right now. The only thing I'm adding is 2 TSP of VC.

Sold, I would check your Ca & Mag. I really don't think the C is doing this, as I am not having any issues similar to that at all.

baloutang, 5ppm would require ~3/4 tsp (a tad less but I prefer to round up--even a tsp would be good to start), 2x/day & that's w/o any carbon, which will remove the VC. For theraputic doses, you need to get it up to at least 30ppm, 2x/day.

Thanks pufferpunk! I've removed the carbon and doubled the dosage today. Zoos don't look worse, but not much better at the moment. Crossing fingers that tomorrow will bring better results.

Go for the whole tsp tomorrow & keep raising it by a tsp every other day, until you reach the therapudic dosage. Keep an eye on your pH & alk. With the I-herb C, it shouldn't be affected.

I know that what is being used is sodium ascorbate which is buffered vit c. I just want to get inputs on this one.

Ascorbic Acid/Sodium Ascorbate
Crystalline Powder
100% Pure Buffered Vitamin C
Pharmaceutical Grade
Hypo-Allergenic pH 7.1
A Dietary Supplement

This NutriBiotic product is a 50/50 mix of Ascorbic Acid and Sodium Ascorbate.

The manufacturing procedure for ascorbic acid (natural source vitamin C) involves a 15 step process. Vegetable starch is reduced to a simple sugar (D-glucose) which is then converted to pure ascorbic acid. For more details on this process, see our ascorbic acid labels.

The manufacturing procedure for sodium ascorbate involves dissolving ascorbic acid in solution with sodium bicarbonate (prepared from sea water). This process removes the bicarbonate from the sodium replacing it with ascorbic acid forming sodium ascorbate. This process produces a truly buffered vitamin C.

The Ascorbic Acid/Sodium Ascorbate is another pure vitamin C that is readily disguised in prepared foods, it's also been a favorite among health professionals who prescribe mega doses of vitamin C to treat illness. It combines moderate acidity to enhance digestion with fully-reacted, tissue compatible sodium ascorbate to create a form of vitamin C. It can also be used in veterinary applications with animals accustomed to mildly tart flavors (herbivores and omnivores).

As a dietary supplement, mix 1/4 teaspoon or more in a glass of juice or water. Take with or without meals.

50% High Solubility Sodium Ascorbate USP-FCC** (C6H7Na6) and 50% Ascorbic Acid (Type 'S') USP-FCC (C6H7NaO6).

Contains no fillers, excipients, lubricants, binders, starch, wheat, soy, milk, egg, yeast, rose hips, animal products, colorings, flavorings, or preservatives.

We use only 100% pure pharmaceutical grade ascorbic acid (USP-FCC) which contains no corn residue, plant antigens, or protein impurities. Persons allergic to corn or yeast can use this product with confidence.

If I use this product, Should I be dosing about 2.5 tsp to get 11225 mg which will be around the 30 ppm dosage 2x a day?

TIA

Is this for your 120? I dose 2tsp, 2x/day on my 100g system. Been dosing for about 6 months now (not that high at 1st though), which I estimate is about 23ppm (around 9,000mg).

Puffer,
yes it is for my 120. I see that you're up to 2 tsp 2x a day so if I use the product I posted and if I dose 2tsp2x a day which would give me 9450 mg per dose and that would give me around 25ppm for a full dose. am I right?I will be starting with 1 tsp 2x a day for a week then bump it up from there untill I get to my desired dose. Is this the right thing to do?

Kimoy, If you are dosing for problems with your corals, than yes, I would use that amount. Be sure to remove any carbon or the like, for a while until things look better. I out my Purigen back after a month but dose my sump, after where it is placed.

just curious since this is such a long thread i don't really have the time to go through the whole thing. What type of vitamin C are you guys using to dose?? Just the regular white tablets that you buy at the drug store for human consumption or is there special aquarium vitamin C.

JM68, I'm using sodium ascorbate which is buffered vit c. You can purchase it from iherb.com.
If you do use the pill form I think people have had issues with PH and alk. There are some additional additives in the pill (binders) that cause some minor problems.
I've only used the sodium ascorbate and have not had any of the issues that others have using the pill. I think Puffer uses sodium ascorbate as well.

Pufferpunk, a few questions:

Do you ever run carbon or GFO anymore in your tank since you are continually dosing VC?

Have you gone in an off cycle at all and noticed any algae blooms?
I was dosing C as a prophylactic method and any time I stopped I would notice a slight algae bloom in my tank.

Do you feed the same in your tank?
