Trick to Pink and Gold Palys

Has anyone had luck with Pink and Golds palys. Mine grow like wild fire with nice big polyps however ever since I acquired them they kind of browned out on me. I currently have them in low light and and high light but no luck so far. Input would be highly appreciated. Thx

it's more with water quality to get that nice light bright pink and golden center.

I had mine brown with t-5"s, then I switched to HQI and the colored right up.a

I gotta say its a tank to tank thing. Mine have a very bright ring and a little brown . I run a150 MH only 20k elos bulb and an old magnetic ballast. Its all about the tank.

I have yet to see these infamous Pink and Gold Palys I have been hearing so much about....

I have no clue what they look like. Anyone care to enlighten me? Link, pic, or whatever?

that's what LEDs do... they act like more potent attinics and accentuate more the look of the coral.

I have a 6 bulb 54watt ati sunpower and they get that nice color. AIt is weird because each polyp is a different color. Some are more pinkish and other more goldish/yellow mixed in. They sare a pretty color but they grow like a weed. A xenia of the zoanthids they are.

they sure can get out of control. It must be a water quality issue with mine because I have 6x39w T5 from aquatic life and still brown.

What are your water parameters? How long have you had them? For me it took about 2 months for them to color up.

Some color up for me while some don't it doesn't matter to what section of the tank they're at.

Thats the weird thing behind them...it doesn't make much sense. Have you ever had one not color up then to color up then once again not color up?

I took this picture (no editing beyond cropping, possibly but not likely 'auto adjust' on the picture viewer) of our Djition Pink and Golds. They are in our frag tank (8" tank height) under 250W 20k Radiums, so pretty high light. We have had high phosphates for awhile, although they are starting to come down. You'd have to ask my husband what they are at right now. He is a firm believer in plentiful water changes.

^ Thanks for the picture. I googled and found a few different polyps labled pink and golds. Some looked like one polyp I have, and others another.

They resemble Mohawks to me, but a little different.

I'm not positive. I think that was taken after we'd had them ~6 months.

I'm more of a passive reefer, where I tell my husband what to buy and what work he has to do on the system :lol: If you want more detailed info, I'm sure he's got it posted somewhere under the name RonMidtownStomp.

We are relatively low stocked on fish, but have many mid-sized colonies of SPS, LPS, zoas, and a few others. Our tank has been established for about 2 years, but the frag tank these were in has been up <3 months. Before that, they were in a different frag tank for ~3-6 months. All tanks are plumbed together as a single system, plus there is a sump, water change chamber, and a separate skimmer tank (don't know skimmer details). We have a closed loop on the display tank, and powerheads in all tanks. My husband likes to keep fairly high flow and light on everything. We have 250W 20k radiums and reflectors on all the tanks, 1 light per 2 feet of tank.

I'll have to check how the PnGs are doing lately. My husband had put them into the shade for awhile (on purpose) and our new zoas have been getting my attention lately. Any other questions?

Also, I'd like to note that our pink elephants have had 3 or 4 distinctly different looks since we got them ~1.5 years ago. They are finally starting to look a little pink, but my favorite was the pretty blue they were at one point. I think some zoas are just more variable depending on their environment than others (PPEs, for example, have been consistent in our tank over the same time period).

Nice reply Deanna. One more question for you. When you PE changed in the different color variations did you do anything different during that time? Was there a difference in any water parameters?

MRMS, mine looked like that for a while, but the skirts on mines had very good colored light pink/fuchsia under attinics. then dropped them down in height now duller, but suckers grow like weeds. Now they are off to DBTC.
