Tridacna gigas

Even at some of the LA wholesalers they don't show up that often. They're not that expensive though when they are smaller in size.

IMO, they look Fantastic and very striking once they reach over 10".

I know clamsdirect had some for sale, also tanku.com (Jim norris) had some I believe.

The clam farm in the Marshall Islands has not had a successful spawn of T. gigas in a number of years. This, combined with the fact that most T. gigas are sold to the food industry first, means very few T. gigas actually reach us in the marine ornamentals industry.

Please folks do not forget, that 95% of us do not have the tank size required to keep a gigas as it matures. It is not the same as a piece of coral, that can be propagated.

I would hate to think of someone buying one of these creatures keeping it for a few years and then realizing that they have to get rid of it, because they cannot support it. These guys get very large and unless you have a super duper sized reef, I would suggest passing on these mollusks.

Best of luck all.

I dont think anyone would have a problem finding a home for a gigas that has out grown their tank. There are plenty of people with large tanks that would be more than happy to take them, I'm sure.

Exactly what I was thinking.

We are not talking about a 6" Demonic grey Domino Damsel here that no body wants, where talking about a spectacular 16-30" king of clams. I'm sure you can even make some $$$ by selling a clam with these highlights to various dedicated collector/hobbyists.

Heh...ever see a T. gigas the size of a VW bug? Wish I could afford a tank for that specimen!
;)

Thanks everyone for your comments. I have a 200 gallon tank and can afford to buy a much larger one. However, I appreciate the concern of those that were worried about the animal and it's future. This is one of the joys of this website. Additionally, I was unaware that they are use for food. I read a ton and didn't realize it. Keep the info coming, it's appreciated.

Would be a very interesting problem shipping a large gigas clam. The 11" derasa I just got wouldn't fit in an IO bucket. The guy brought it to me from Dallas in a large cooler. A large gigas would have to have something similar or even bigger, and if you shipped it with a carrier you would have to take precautions for it being turned upside down, thrown, etc.

JT just got in a really nice gigas clam that he is taking to MACNA to sell. It is a bit on the pricey side though IMO. They really have been rare lately though and it is a beautiful clam.

FWIW, Nathan

I got a 14 inch gigas (which is now about 16 inches)(using one yard of calcium!!!). It was shipped to me using just the old bag method (5) and a LARGE box without any problems. I think because of the gigas's smooth shell unlike a squamosa this is possible.

For all fellow reefers if you have a gigas that is too big let me know, I am starting the Gigas House. This is a non profit company!!! They will be in good hands! )I may soon have one of the few salt water swimming pools.)

JT's gigas may not leave Texas!!!!!

Found Gigas

Found Gigas

I was at Harbor Aqautics this weekend, they have three Gigas clams, they have one in the main tub that looks awesome. I picked up a small green Max and a small green Hippopus, no space in any of my tanks for a Gigas.

You will need to call them, as I did not ask on prices.

Hey I would like to have a Ggias too, and I have access to them, but folks these guys get to be enourmous weighing in at over 500 lbs when mature.

We are not talking 200 gallon reefs big enough, we are talking 1000 gallon reefs and bigger preferred.

Now if you just plan on keeping it for a few years and then getting rid of it, or thinking it will never live that long in your tank I suggest that if you are looking to get one, please do some serious research on these.

Please reconsider these as aquarium animals, they are just to big!!!! Even though they start out small, they will outgrow almost every aquarium but a few.

Jim. if you build a salt swimming pool that may just be big enough, and if you do can I come snorkling in it! :D

Best of luck to all, Rob
