My Niger trigger is hiding behind the rocks alot and his skin is flaking off in parts looking discolored.He looks terrible, still deep greenish blue but with a white tint now. He has a very few small white spots but doesnt look like ich iv seen before. (cant get pics of him easily)

He comes out only to eat, eats at all three feedings. I soak his food in garlic(as of today) and gave him a treat of a clam on the half shell the other day...still looking bad.

all levels are at .000 as of 15min ago.

skimmer working well

SG is normal 1.022

I use a ground probe in display tank(better used in sump?)

Feed: (Daily) 10am-pellets and flake(formula2) 2pm-brineshirmp 7pm-flakes and pellets (all in moderation)

He is not feeding and hiding behind the rocks now, breathing is abnormal and rapid. Greenish blue coloration is still present, but small patches or spots of discoloration cover him.

Other trigger is showing same signs, while the butterfly is doing very well and eating normal. Both clownfish are also feeding extremely well and are very active.

I cant get one where you can really tell anything because he hides and I only have my camera phone...

It really is strange loss of pigmentationin parts of his skin, almost like rub spots. I want to say lateral line almost but still not really like when I have seen it on a tang.

What would NOT effect the corals,inverts,clownfish, or butterfly but would effect these triggers? Cause them to hide and skin to be discolored and patchy looking? Also causing rapid breathing.

I really will try tomorrow when the lights come on to take a usable picture.

he is dead, any advice would be nice though because this is rediclious. Lost 3 fish this way, all large fish, the smaller ones havent been effected nor has my butterfly. no cause known.

tested water params, all normal, took sample to LFS, all checked out.

SG, normal

79.1 degrees.

something in my tank is killing my large fish, a sickness of some form.

The fish are fine for 2-3 days eating well then it hits them, happened to two othe fish. While my butterfly and clowns are happy as can be for months. I may remove all my fish from DT and throw into QT for 8 weeks, will any sickness live with out a host? I just hate to scare my fish and stuff them into a 10gal when they are doing fine.

You should at least take a picture of him after he died so we could possibly see what he looks like.

So far its not an easy one to troubleshoot, visuals would help a ton.

With that said, if it was my tank I would have already removed everything to quarantine, probably FW dipped them going into quarantine and seen what there is to see.

If you put them into a couple 10g aquariums, you'll have a lot easier time seeing them up close and diagnosing what the problem is. Also, if it's something like flukes, the FW dip would make them fall off into the bucket and you can see that they have flukes by that.

What all did you have in your tank for fish? This post seems just to be about your Niger trigger, but in the middle you mentioned the other trigger seemed fine, then in your last post that 3 large fish have all died. Maybe give a complete fish listing of what you had and what you have now, along with corals/inverts.

Fish: Niger trigger(died), white tail trigger, two clarkiis, butterfly,clown goby.

Inverts: serpant starfish, unknown number of hermits, 5 turbos

Corals: GSP,candycane,kenya tree,a rock of mushrooms,small rock of rics, two birdsnest, and a monty up top.(all doing very well)

Dead fish: kole tang (4 weeks ago) blue tang(3 weeks ago), lyretail anthis. (I didnt have the triggers then)

I am making sure the QT is ready to go right now, ph, temp and all.

I snapped a few pics before he died right when the lights came on, pretty bad quality though.

both triggers were FW dipped for 7 min and I did not see anything drop off, though I did see the whitetail eat today. Garlic and zoa soaked formula one flake.

Did all 3 of those previous fish die with the same symptoms or were those deaths related to something else?

Are their fins cloudy? It's hard to tell on a Niger cause their fins arent transparent, but if they have cloudy fins and small spots at all, I'd say you've got ich problems.
 
The other fish were the same symptoms, same style death. I attributed it to a faulty ground probe, I fixed it and desided id stay away from tangs till I tried a hardier fish again.

Triggers fins are normal looking but his body was covered in blisters. The white tail has the same blisters and a few small white spots, like 5 or 6. mainly the blisters all over his body. But is feeding after FW dip.

clowns are in QT and happy, bufferfly is in QT and ****ed off.

it is very odd, im going to try and get my roommate to convert my JPEG to a HTM or whatever type reefcentral accepts.

will a bacteria infection of the skin be able to live in the water with out fish hosts? like ick cannot? This I guess is the only question because no fish will be in my DT for the next 7-8weeks. :(
 
Bacterial arent a parasite that has to have a host to survive, they can survive in a tank without fish.

I've never dealt with a bacteria problem to be honest, so I'm not 100% on how to treat it. I'm not sure at all what it is either, without pictures it's hard to diagnose, I'm purely speculating when I say it sounds bacterial.

For what it's worth, RC takes jpegs. What I use though is photobucket. Make a free account, it takes seconds and you can have large files then. RC only lets you host 50k pictures which is tiny.

That doesnt look as bad as I had pictured even though obviously if it's killing your other fish it's still bad.

Just a btw, if you're going to take pictures of fish and want them to turn out nice and clear, I use a tripod. If you dont have one available or are using a cell phone or something, stack up some boxes or anything that keeps the camera still, you'll get a much better shot.

With that said, I'm not sure what it is ailing your fish. I'd definitely be putting him in QT and end up treating with FW dips at least on a daily basis for a while, until you figure out what it is. I'd be hesitant to copper him up in the QT until you know for sure what you have going on.
