triggerfish in reef with anthians and chromis??

had a trigger (clown) have a reef and never shall they meet; however, see folks adding the less aggressive ones to reefs with success. i never have because of the nutrient load of a trigger, however, with that under control; i'm rethinking this??? how do these guys do with small fish??? the almost "reef safe" ones: niger, blue throat, redtail, etc....

any thoughts?

I have 2 bluethroats in a reef tank. Well I can't fully say if they'd be fine with small fish cause I keep mine with similar sized fish. But from others experiences they will do fine with small fish, especially those established already. However, when I first introduced my fire clown one of my bluethroats thought she was food and tried to eat her. Well after a few tries in trying to eat the fire clown I guess he figured she wasn't the calamari I feed him lol. So he he stopped and now they swim together. Bluethroats are one of the safest triggers in the reef cause they eat food in the water column. They tend not to hunt as much as other triggers. My cleaner shrimp and even the blood shrimp I introduced after are doing well in my tank.

I have witnessed a large blue throat take a large chunk out of a much smaller yellow tang once. I think this is more a rarity though.

Love the male blue-throat triggers. Mr. Saltwater Tank always talks about them in his "Fish on Fringe" discussion. He loves his. If I had the setup, I'd do it for sure.

I haven't heard of them going after fish like anthias or clowns. Mostly just tumbling rocks and going after CUC.

Also heard that Niger triggers get to be a real pain, and they get really big.

They always have them at PETCO :)

thx for the comments!!!!

i'm thinking about the blue throat, they are the smallest, and "nicest"; i guess. i don't want to lose my little fish, however, but i guess it's worth a shot. i remember my clown trigger would eat a feeder goldfish in about 1 second; chewed it faster than my piranhas!!! i think a blue throat would make a great addition, always very active and an interesting looking fish....

I have a pinktail in with fairy wrasses, clowns barely larger than a thumbnail, a school of green chromis and other small fish like chrysiptera damsels and a neon dottyback. Never had any issues. Still adding some more wrasses, some anthias, and a pair of neon gobies and expect no issues from the pinktail.

As far as inverts go he did eat my longspine urchin, a coral banded shrimp, and does try to eat my little hermit crabs (but never succeeds with the hermits).

We keep a Niger with a trio of Chomis and a trio of Anthias, have never had a problem with any aggression from him.

Hmm. I am also interested in adding a blue male trigger to my new 180. Won't be for a while as it will be one of the last fish if I do decide to go for it.

I would definitely consider crosshatch, bluethroat, and sargassum for a large reef tank. Had a bad experience with a niger, and all triggers can be nightmares to catch out of an established tank

excellent feedback guys!!!!!!:bounce3:

i am excited and nervous to announce that we will have a new addition to the family....i ordered a 2.5' to 3.5' blue throat trigger; to be delivered Thursday. i will post pictures on arrival.

thx for your thoughts on the subject!!!!!;)

Nice choice. I have a fairly new pair of BT's in my tank that have been model citizens. They haven't bothered anything including anthias or CUC. They are poop factories though!
