triggerfish selection

I have not added a new fish to my system in several months. I'm thinking I'm due. I LOVE triggers but I'm afraid of them nipping at my SPS.

I've seen that some are supposed to be reef safe. Anyone with experience or opinions. Thinking about Niger, sargassum, or pink tail. Crosshatch just too expensive to risk it. When I move up i'd like to get a hawaiian black.

I just put a pair of Blue Jaw Triggers in a full blown reef. I have not had them long enough to really note there behavior. I have read a few threads and most say that the ones you mantioned are good choices. I have to say, now that my pair have started to get accustomed to there surroundings and they are more active they are amazing fish. I like them more than my true percs.

jps - full blown reef as in you have other small fish and crustaceans as well? I'd like a trigger as well, but am afraid they are going to make lunch out of some of my other animals.

My smallest fish is a Fridmani's Pseudochrimis. I have a few pistol shrimp and am planning on adding a small herd of cleaner shrimp. I plan on keeping my bluejaws very well fed so there is no need for them to go hunting.

The fuzzy dwarf lion, that is another story. Every night I hear the pop pop pop of the pistol because the fuzzy dwarf is squared up to the shrimps hole. Sadly that means the lion is going to go to the lfs.

Ohhh hmm....

well, I'd really like to acquire a nice trigger, but am afraid to add him to a tank with cleaner, peppermint shrimp and a firefish....

Bluejaw's, Saragassem's and Crsshatch's are probbably the most reef safe followed by Pinktail's, Black Durgeon's and Niger's. I personally have only had my Bluejaw's for about 2 weeks so everything I am saying is based on my research and not actual experience. I think the secret is keep them well fed fat and happy.

Any of the X triggers are good reef fish.

However, they are usually collected at 5+ inches and might require a larger tank.

yeah, from all I've read, a sargassum is the way i'm going. don't want to spend the money it would take to get a crosshatch. But, i'm gonna wait until I move into my bigger tank. it'd be too crowded right now. I'll have to resist temptation out of respect for the newcomer.
