Okay, I've been through this twice now and it just no longer seems like a coincidence to me. First time, I had a dragon-faced pipefish in my tank for about 2 weeks that was eating frozen food, but wasn't terribly active. One evening, I noticed the tank's Ca levels had dipped a bit low, so I dosed some Tropic Marin Bio-Calcium to get things back in check. The next day, I found the pipefish dead. :eek2:
Discouraged, but not beaten, I picked up another dragon-faced pipe a couple of weeks later. This time, the fish lived for about a month and was very active and alert and went crazy over frozen food...up until yesterday evening. Once again, I found my Ca levels were on the low side (Ca reactor sounds better all the time), so I broke out the TM Bio-Calcium. Much to my suprise, I found the second pipefish dead this afternoon! There was no signs of stress in the animal just minutes before administering the suppliment and it had eaten a good bit of mini-mysis just about 30 minutes prior.
I'm putting this out here as either a question to see if anybody else uses TM Bio-Calcium in a tank with pipefish (or perhaps any other sygnathid) or as a heads up to those who might consider using the product in a sygnathid tank. FWIW, all other fish and all corals look happy as can be.
The water conditions as of 10 minutes ago are as follows:
pH: 8.28
Alk: 10dkH
Ca: 380
Mg: 1150
temp: 76.8
SG: 1.025
NO3: 0
NO2: 0
The pipe lived in the SPS dominated, 55g reef listed in my sig.
