Tropical Paradise Eddie's Blue Tort

rxx2

Apparently their two completely different corals. The ones reeflections is asking about came in on a couple different shipments to Eddie. I remember seeing them when they came in and they were thick growing bluish stags that looked similiar to an austera. Not sure what wholesaler he got them from, but i though it Walt Smith.

Sand Dollar
This is true what you said about this shipment that came into Eddie back then.I think I said that in my post here also. There were only a couple large frags of these that were sold. And this is where Jason/Dragon comes into play here.He was at TP a lot when shipments were coming in.And he did I think and that time,is was the same as Eddie tort.Don't have a clue if W.S was connected to this tort.Like Sand Dollar says it's not the same as the Dalton tort. Then this tort could be a rare tort after all.If only a few they came in.And how many are still in tanks today.I'm going to try to contact ROAB and see what happens here.I think he isn't as active as he was before. But he could give is a better idea, what's going on with this tort.
Curt
Thanks Sand Dollar, and all the other folks here. This has been a real struggle to get to bottom of this.

I just sent and email off to ROAB on this matter. He was there at this time at TP.I didn't think it would be this hard to find out about this tort.Sorry guys,I thought this was going to be simple ?
Just trying to put this tort to rest. And if it's the real coral that Eddie had also that you be great. That way this tort wasn't totally lost after all.So maybe ROAB will chime in here.

For those want to know about Eddies Tort
I just heard from Jason (Coral Fantasy). He was around TP very often. He said it came from the same place as Eddies Tort.So what has Jason,I would awesome it is Eddie's Blue tort he had.I got Jaon email, but not sure how to attach to this post,if anyone wants to read the whole think.Or if I have trouble with it can email to someone, and they can post it.I never done that before. But it was great news to hear this.So it seems now Eddies tort is still in the hobby.

I would be interested in info on that tort, and where to get a frag as well. It is interesting to find out where things have ended up, and if they survived. Maybe a global database could be formulated between shipper, LFS, consumer, and hobbiest trades. This may help us unravel why things work or don't work in our little pieces of the ocean. This would also help track how many corals/fish have been exported from other lands, and imported to the US. Anyone agree? Maybe reefcentral could be the location for such a database. Isn't everyone familiar with it? I think most serious hobbiest have found the site, and are refered to it by others. LFS should inform customers of information that can be attained at this website. We could gather all LFS in the US to help strengthen the industry and knowledge all around.

Thanks,

Rick

Curt forwarded me this email from Jason, and asked me to post for all thats interested in knowing about the Eddies Purple tort.
Glad to help you out Reefflections.

Curt,
It's nice to hear from you!! The tort I got for you came from the same
place as where Eddie got his from. That perticular tort is very
sensative to water chemistry change especially ALK. I am not int RC
anymore since the mod over there didn't like me or something..so I
don't feel like going there as much as before. I am still in the bobby
for sure but just not spending as much time as I did before. BTW..I
never got the purple monster frag from you? Is the PM colony still
doing alright?

Below is a poor quality photo of my 'Dave Tort'. This is a solid dark blue tort with blue polyps. It is a VERY slow grower. It is from the original colony Dave Tran housed in Eddie's tank at Tropical Paradise a few years back. Myself and very few others were lucky enough to score frags before the mysterious disappearence. As far as I know it has always been called the 'Dave Tort'. Despite being a slow grower, it is quite hardy. This coral has been through a lot over the years.

Thanks SPS Agent for your reply on that tort.I never knew it was called Dave's Tort.I was wondering how many of these were out there?Because like you said it's been a few years. You are right as being a slow growing coral. Are those 2 frags of it to the left of the pic?Jason did tell me the one I have also,is the same one.So at least a few of us still have it.So you can count me in also.It does seem a really and unknown tort in the hobby today.
Thanks again,it looks like it's doing really good for you in that photo. Also glad to see you are still in the hobby.

Hi Curt-

Thanks for the compliments. Dave tort is just what we have been calling it locally for a while. I sometimes called it NOR*CAL tort but people were confusing it with cali tort so I now just call it dave tort now.

Anyhow those are different frags to the left of it. I have never fragged this piece and would probably need to be bribed a pretty penny to sacrifice a frag since it is suuuucccchhhh a slow grower. I must say that it has increased the rate of growth in recent months. I have it about 4 inches under the water line directly below a 400W 20K Coralvue. Since the ballast driving the Coralvue is an HQI, it is very white light. Under bluer light it can get very dark blue.

With so few of us owning it and it being such a slow grower this could definitely be the next craze if the hype started. I prefer it on the DL for now though :)

Here is an older pic I found in my gallery:

Thanks for your update on it.So now will just call it Dave Tort. These new pics are more in line with my coloration.I was wondering why your's seem so much lighter in color.Mines is that dark coloration you just sent. And also can see hints of purple coloration to it also.Got mine under the 400 HQI Aqua Connects, which is making the blue to pop with puple hues. But it's getting to be a real looker !Did you finish the big tank?
Hey you got a nice coral there Alex
:eek1:
Curt

This coral falls in the same growth pattern as my Purple Monster. If that's the case, frags will be rather pricey for sure. And at one time I have 5 of these frags. It's a long story don't even ask what happen to them....Those Acro flatworms, had a feast on them. When you have frags, can take a total pretty quick.I read where you were in a battle also, like the rest of us.But got them out of the picture. And these two frags are doing just fine.

Don't think so.This was and imported coral. And only a few of these are in the hobby today. That tort that you mentioned has been around awhile now. They aren't the same coral.

In the picture that AgentSPS posted (the darker blue), the coral actually looks like the Echinat's from Bali (Cultured) There are some Tort looking pieces that have been coming in from Bali for a while now. Since Eddie was one of the first to bring in these cultured, is it possible that it is a Bali Echinata/Tort or similiar? Is this coral rally that nice, because it looks pretty common to me? I would like to see a picture of the purple one that you have Curt. Just being curious is all, no harm intended here :)

I agree, although not from Bali - here is my aquaculture that looks 'tortish' - It has since darkened to a deep purple color...
