Trouble finding matching stain for tank stand.

I have been trying to find a stain for my canopy that will match the stand for my tank. I have brought the stained door from the stand into the hardware stores and I am really having trouble finding a good match for it. Are there any paint places or hardware stores that have a more high-tech way of matching the colors? Maybe like some kind of computerized color-matching system?

It's made by Top Fin and I can't even find their contact info so that I can ask them what color/brand they used on this stand. Anyone know their contact info? Thanks.

did u try tybony stain/paint...try a high end paint store...they usually can get a great match

I was in the same boat. I got about 3-4 of those little minwax cans of stain, started out with the lightest oak color, and added in a few drops of the red oak, then added a couple drops of the black color (was it walnut?) Tried it on the inside of the canopy on bare wood to see if it matched. too light, so I added a few more drops of this, a few more drops of that, after 4 tries, I finally nailed it. That is how the furniture guys do it. Get yourself a plastic eye-dropper (free from a pharmacy). If you know the basic color range you will be in (i.e. it is somewhere in the mahogany/red oak family) you can get the cans you need to get yourself close. If you can, once you get the color as close as possible, put a thin coat on the existing piece too.

Wow. Thanks for all the speedy, helpful responses guys. I think my first step will be to go to a local paint store and show the door to them and see if they can match it instead of trying to figure it out myself at the hardware store. That way, if it is the wrong color, I can be mad at someone else instead of being mad at myself :).

Hey, see if there is a Sears Hardware near you. They are closing most. The one near me has stain down to half off. I personally like Minwax stain.
