Trouble with Remora Protein Skimmer

If anyone on here has some helpful info please let me know....here is the situation:

I have a 29 gallon reef tank with an emperor 400 which provides more than enough filtration, a maxi jet 400 for water flow, filter pads with all chemical and biological filteration in the pads, an aqualight power compact running a 10,000k 50/50 daylight bulb and a blue actinic light bulb and lastly my problem is a remora protein skimmer that uses a maxi jet 1200 to power the skimmer.

The problem is that about a week ago I noticed that my skimmer was not moving water thru it like normal. A closer examination revealed that it wasnt flowing at all. I took the maxi jet off and sure enough it wasnt pulling water thru it. The maxi jet was running but evidentallly was very clogged(this is the original maxi jet that came with the skimmer and I got it about 1999. I was advised by my local fish store where I buy my maintenance supplies(salt, pads, de-clorinator, etc.) that I should take my 5 gallon bucket that I use for water changes and do a small amount of vinegar and the rest all water combo and let all my maxi jets run in the water mixture for about 30 minutes which I did.

Next, I checked the maxi jet 1200 and it was barely getting water flow now, so I tried the old unseize the motor method and gave the maxi jet a couple of good licks on the side of the housing with a screwdriver handle. Sure enough it unclogged and voila....I had my maxi jet up and running so I thought I was good to go...unfortunately I was wrong! The problem is that when I hooked it back up to the tubing for the skimmer it did nothing once again. My theory and common sense would lead me to believe that if the maxi jet is operating properly and as far as I know, the maxi jet is the only electronically running part of the skimmer, then there must be a clog in the tubing line or at the end of the tubing where water flow spills into the resevoir of the skimmer. I have no clue what type of device to use to unclog this as its not regular clear tubing, its actually a grey colored tube that connects to the maxi jet outlet and runs up into the skimmer itself. Also, the tube is angled almost like a J shaped letter so it would have to be a flexible tool to clean it with. The other problem that Im more stressed about is that when I was cleaning the jets I went ahead and did a 5 gallon water change that the tank needed. While doing the water change I accidentally tipped the remora skimmer to far on its side and dumped a bunch of bad water and waste out of the skimmer into the tank right after doing a water change!!! I wasnt happy to say the least but Im keeping my fingers crossed that when I get home from work the emperor 400 filter will have filtered all the bad water and waste out of the tank. If anybody on here can offer some advise on fixing the remora protein skimmer or if anybody knows wether or not my tank will crash from that skimmer waste please let me know asap. Thank you in advance....

The Remora uses spray injection, it is a good bet if the pump was clogged the skimmer is too.

one other question.....I let my collection cup or box at the top of my skimmer rest all the way down in the skimmer...there is a black screw on the right side of the the skimmer body that if screwed in raises the box a little and screws in tight against the collection cup....will the skimmer produce more in the collection cup if I use the screw and lift the collection cup up??? I dont have to empty my collection cup more than once every 3 months or longer....maybe Im not using my skimmer to its full potential

It should have came with a brush to clean the injector on the skimmer, and you could try a new or another maxi jet pump.

Raising the cup is for a darker skim.

You should get a new MJ1200 and soak the whole skimmer in vinegar. I'm pretty sure you never cleaned the spray nozzle inside the skimmer. Like one of them said, it should have came with a brush that you would undo the screw plug and then use it to clean the nozzle (part where the water injected out to make bubbles)

And i have had a pumps impeller break loose from the magnet so the pump would not pump water correctely. Not sure if it was an MJ pump but it might have been.

Man, I dont know who you are but you assume to much...I practice general maintenance to my tank or I wouldnt have a reef tank since 1999 that has never crashed due to anything Ive done so you are wrong about that sir.....I clean all my maxi jets and my emperor 400 filter and clean the collection cup on the skimmer but Im not a pro at disassembling a protein skimmer so no...I havent done any maintenance on the skimmer itself...guess I should just know that and not ask for help considering you are very sarcastic and a bit of a jerk...dont worry about replying to any future posts I make ...your info is not needed....

I assumed nothing, you plainly stated that you had never cleaned it, what did you expect to happen? If your MJ was clogged, you didn't clean it, if the spray injection was clogged, you never cleaned it. Cleaning the skimmer is actually considered maintenance. That includes the pump and the injector, (not just the outside of it) if you think the tone was harsh, then I am sorry, but it does not change the fact that equipment works best when maintained in proper working condition. Taking a screwdriver to the side of it is not maintenance.

If you have been running this skimmer since 99 with no maintenance, you should expect it to not work. If that is harsh, then it is time to realize that sometimes life is harsh. AquaC will send you a manual for the skimmer, free of charge and it will show you how to properly care for it. They are an excellent company and would probably even walk you through it over the phone. It isn't hard, but I suspect with the lack of maintenance it will be severely clogged and the brush that came with it won't do it.
