trouble with sump

I an having trouble with my sump making gurgling noises from the left side overflow. I have a 90 gal with duel corner overflows, these are DIY overflows. From the pic below looking straight at the tank the left return pipe in black drops below the pipes top causing it to slurp. The right side is fine. Should I union the two return pipes so there is only one exit?

I don't think you can link an image in off your computer. Upload it to a site like photobucket, and then link in the URL from there.

Putting in a durso overflow may fix your gurgling noises. I didn't have room so I just turned down the return flow so that the bulkhead was never completely covered with water.

Mine is exactly that way !! You may need to throttle back the return pump a tad . The shortest drain will flow faster than the longer drain ( resistance=distance) sounding like a raging river in the sump .

I think I fixed the problem. I extended the shortest return deeper into the sump with a coupling and a 3" piece of pvc. :)

Also you can put in some plastic pond sponge and water will evenly flow into cutting down on spash up . My drains are both 1.5" and I ran them to the bottom in 11" deep sump , put T's on the ends aswell

Same Issue with 120 gallon AGA with dual megaflows

Same Issue with 120 gallon AGA with dual megaflows

I have just filled my new tank as well and the sump (30 gallon) sounds like a small washing machine. It seems to surge at times and then quieter for a while. My return pump is a Mag 9.5. I have a CL Skimmer in the same chamber with the returns from the tank. Would it be better if it was in a different chamber?

Not an end of world deal but just a little loud at times. It is much louder than my 55 but then I did not have a sump.

Any suggestions?

Try some sponge or float some media bag or , add some rock . It will cut back the water splash and the noise . The sponge will make it virtually silent its just hard to find the sponge that comes with the mag pumps. Look around at ponds supplies etc

Thanks for the input.
It seems that the noise is coming more from the chamber with the inputs than from the tank megaflows. Two 1 1/4" inputs from tank seems to be too much for the chamber. The chamber size is
12" X 9" X 8" deep. Based on this size, should I maybe move the skimmer to the second chamber or add more water to the sump? The Mag 9.5 does have the foam on it and it is noit very loud. What about foam for the two 1 1/4" line coming into the sump?

Thats what I meant !!

Surging with the durso (megaflow all glass) will happen if you are not venting the stand pipe enough. What takes place is the overflow box fills and creates a siphon, you get the surge of water into the sump as the overflow box siphons out. Once the siphon brakes in the overflow box you will hear the loud gurgle of air. With a larger vent just enough air is allowed into the stand pipe to prevent the siphon.
Just something else to look into :)
