can they mate? im sure its been asked and answered before, but the damn search never works. also, whats the best way to tell the 2 apart? trues have orange in their outer eye and ocellaris's eyes are completely black, right? is tht really the only way to tell the two apart besides trying to count dorsal fin spines?

Dorsal spines is the most reliable method.

Yes, they can mate, but if you raise the fry and sell them be sure you're selling them as a hybrid, or A. Ocellaris and A. Percula may truly be the same species before long.

interesting. i have no intensions of trying to sell and make money, just the experience of seeing it all replicated in captivity in my own tank first hand. do they pair together just as easily as 2 of the same species would?

mainly, the reason for my question is that i recently bought 2 true percs and a lta for them. well one showed dominance (surprisingly it was the smaller one) and ended up pushing the other away. the other is now on its way out as it wont eat a thing and also its become apparent it has in internal parasite as well as fin rott. medication will start tomorrow for it, but its prob too late. so instead of buying another true perc, i wanted to get an ocellaris. i figured id get a smaller one as to try and help the pairing. but before that, i want to be sure that an ocellaris and true perc will pair so i don't just end up with one in the lta and the other on the other side of the tank. i prefer the interaction of a pair that hosts in the same lta.

If i'm not mistaken, true perculas have 9 dorsal spines, while Ocellaris have 10-11.

There are quite a few people that are good at IDing clowns here on RC, so if you could post a picture others could weigh in on it.
