true percs/natural anemone

Hello,

I'm looking for an anemone for my pair of true percs. I would like to stick with an anemone that is natural to them. I've been looking everywhere for this info and it seems everything i read contradicts. Does anyone know or have a link i can look at that isn't just someones opinion? The only thing that everyone seems to agree on is that a BTA is not a natural host. TIA!
 
thanks for the link. after looking at the link, only 2 nems are natural hosts and both are not beginners :( hmmmm i guess i'll have to wait....

There are three natural hosts for percula. Crispa, magnifica, and gigantea. All of them can be difficult to keep. If you can find a tan colored crispa, it would probably be the easiest of the three to keep.
 
What size of a tank do you have? How long has it been set up? And also the kind of equipment and lighting? Im sure that there is a few of us that could help you out and make sure that your tank is ready for when it comes to getting the right anemone for them.
 
Are you trying to find a natural host because you want to set up an accurate biotope display or because you are trying to increase the possibility of hosting?

The reason I ask is that I think a number of people have had success keeping percs and occelaris with BTAs, even though this isn't a pairing you'd see in the wild. BTAs are a lot easier to keep (as explained above).

The tank has been set up for almost 2 months, i know i need to wait and that's why i'm doing my research now. I received most of the setup free from a friend, so here is the equip. i have for the moment. 55 gallon tank, Emperor 400 Eheim classic canister. I have since purchased 2 aqueon circ pumps 1250 and 950. i have an aquatic life 4 bulb HO T5 light setup. LOVE the lights by the way. I have a life reef sump package on order, but it won't be here until end of june early july :( but worth the wait.

I've been told BTAs are the easiest and at my LFS the most inexpensive, but here is why i don't want a BTA. My LFS called me when they got the their batch of WC true percs in. so i went down to pick them up. They weren't eatting at all so i put them on hold. They had the biggest black stripes of the 4 pairs that were there. They sat at the fish store for 2 weeks until they starting eatting like the pigs clown fish are supposed to be :) While they were there they hosted in a couple different BTA's and when i finally picked them up and brought them home, i noticed quite a bit of the black coloring had disappeared. Since i've brought them home i noticed their black stripes are coming back. So i did some research on RC and found that sometimes true percs and especially SI true percs tend to lose there black in a BTA.

Unless they were just stressed out at the LFS that is why i don't want a BTA. Unless someone can give me contrary info, i would like to stay away from them.

If you are concerned about them losing their "black" I would avoid an LTA (( M. doreensis )), my pair lost 99% of their black while being hosted by one. Their are now hosted by an S. Haddoni, and have gained about 50% of their black back.

BTW -- both are not natural hosts for them -- them being my pair of SI percs.

I definately don't want them to lose their black. Their black was almost as thick as the white stripes when i put them on hold at the LFS. Then i waited 2 weeks for them to eat properly and they hosted in a BTA and they lost quite a bit :( My tank is only a 55g so i don't think a carpet is such a good idea for this size tank. hmmmmm....what to do.....

You can keep a haddoni in a 55, if you have a good sized sump. Right now I have two large "carpets" in a 40 breeder. The system holds about 100gl's, though.

Good food, bright lights, and a haddoni will definitely turn perc's more black. Here's a pair of wild perc's of mine before moving into a haddoni.

Going off of "elegance coral's" post...

I too think a 55 would work, just need to be careful about what other fish you put in there.

I don't have a sump yet, but its on order. I ordered a CLF1 with 13.5 gallon fuge from Lifereef. Not sure how much water fits in the sump itself. But i won't have it until end of June beginning of July.

I have T5 HO aquatic life 4 bulbs. I really like the lights, they light up my whole downstairs.

as far as other fish go, i only have the true perc pair and 5 chromis. I also have a bunch of hermits and turbo snails. I'm not going to be getting any more fish until the sump and skimmer come in. I do have 1 head of frogspawn and some zoos as well.

I just thought that the 13" wide 55 gallon tank would be to narrow for the carpet nems, but you don't think so?

BTW i really like your SI percs, your thread is the reason i went with true percs. :)

The width of a 55 can be a problem. At least from our perspective. The anemone really doesn't care though. They don't require much room. Just enough to spread out and catch some rays. It's the total water volume that's important.

i'm also a little nervous of a carpet eatting my other fish :(
