Yeah... common names and taxonomy are two different animals... with convergent evolution, when species taxinomically different evolve to be similar in appearance, sometimes taxonomy goes against common sense and appearance, including naming... the commonly known taxonomy in the hobby and the scientificly known taxonomy are also two different animals... looks at all the "torts"... while many people commonly throw around the tort name most experienced reefers debate if ANY of them are even torts... same with "palys"...
Examples of three commonly referred "palys" with green mouths I have in my collection... the first are a true PPE frag from my mother colony, the second are closest to OPEs (the RPE thing is another issue discussed in a seperate thread), and the third are the common "watermelons" with green mouths but not PEs to me...
Either way... a better photo pufferpoisen would help... it should be mentioned that just because they're not PPEs doesn't mean they aren't beautiful and worth a darn...

Those I would consider PEs based on structure... the long THIN skirt is what's throwing me off above in the original shot... my second OPEs there have longer skirts coaxed but they remain broader as shown in the pic in contrast to the ones above...

i certainly agree, but i have to get my fix somewhere. so copps, with all those regals, how do you manage zoas? i remember reading that your fish took care of all them you had left in your tank, as expected.
as to pics, i have the ope, and the last ones, watermelons, in addition to these that may or may not be pe-type. i have some of the greens i just posted in my 180 getting lots of light and flow, and i need to get a pic to show the changes. in the meantime here are my pe-type
these are constantly morphing colors on me, but they are approaching this look again(thankfully) (surfnvb if you are reading this- what does that frag you got from me look like now?)
and these look the most like ppe's in form and pattern, but they don't have the green mouths. they are wild and i have only had them a week, so changes may be in store.

Ha ha... yeah with my trio of regals there would never be a way... Before we moved in Dec. '04 I had a 54 corner with all of my zoos... in the new house in the fish room I put in a 6'x2'x17" frag tank and have kept all of my zoos there since. Just now am I getting my 2 54 corners set up to display the collection, along with a pair of onyx percs I've had for years along with a pair of A. tricinctus in the other corner...
I've been ramping up my zoo collection again since being out of it for over a year...
A love for regal angels and zoos does not mix, but fortunately I have seperate systems...
And you are right... my old 65 that was TOTM in 2004 had a ****load of stuff, but not one zoanthid!

yes, i have some of those and they are very different, much larger and tougher. i believe those to be palythoa, as they incorporate sediment into the runners/coenstrum sp? mine have recently developed a white radial stripe going from the edge of the mouth to the brown part. weird. it is on all of them. and these type i have found to not change form, only color.

I may be wrong, I am not a scientist. But I always thought that PE types were Palys and the ones in the first pic were protopalys... but I didn't think that PPE were protopaly's?
Accourding to F/S these type would be Protopalythoa
and I believe these would be Palythoa (or mabey zoanthus gigantus sp? )
