I can not find much info out on the web about the other stuff in TUMS or any other off brand of TUMS. I may be missing something, but what would stop someone from just disolving some TUMS (ordinary old tums not all that fancy chewy stuff) in some RO/Di and use it as a calcium and carbinate dose. There are even some brand that have mag in them as well. It almost sounds lake a silver bullet so I have to be missing something.

Tums Chemical Information

calcium carbonate - The carbonic salt of calcium (CaCO3). Calcium carbonate is used therapeutically as a phosphate buffer in hemodialysis, as an antacid in gastric hyperacidity for temporary relief of indigestion and heartburn, and as a calcium supplement for preventing and treating osteoporosis. (NCI04)

Kids TUMZ

Ingredients
Active Ingredients (per tablet): Purpose:
Calcium Carbonate USP 750mg Antacid

Inactive Ingredients

Calcium carbonate, sorbitol, dextrose, sucrose, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, adipic acid, natural and artificial flavors, maltodextrin, guar gum, red 40 lake, blue 1 lake. Contains: gluten (wheat).

I would be concerned about the sucrose and corn starch.

Not to mention it would take a lot of tums to increase the calcium level in a reef tank. :D

I would think the skimmer would suck it out of the system pretty fast and or activated carbin. And a tums is 750 mg for one tablet that is almost 100% Calcium Carbonate. Just doing the rough math it shouldent take that much. 750mg is about one teaspoon on a rough scale. With seachem reef builder you add one half teaspoon per 40 gal to rais alk by .25 meg a leater so in a 40 gallon tank on tablit should rais .5 meg/l on a very rough basis.

So purple up is basicly very fine Calcium Carbonate.

Yep, with a bit of CaCl2 just for kicks ;)
