Trunk/base elongating

Some of my zoas are elongating. Can anyone tell me if this is nomal if if there is a problem? Im not even sure what it would be called to try and do a seach on it. Thanks for the help!

What sort of lighting do you have and where are the zoas located?

Zoas and palys generally will stretch out like that when there is not enough light present.

Just above and to the left of the last pic. Looks like a single red zoa in the FTS.

Man I see what you mean. How old are the bulbs? How clear is the water? Do you run carbon? Is there a buildup of crud on the surface of the water? Just stabbing in the dark now because it still looks like a lighting problem IMO.

The thing is some zoas like higher light other like lower light. It very much looks like light stretch even though you do have good lights. I would move some of the very stretched ones up and see how they do. You can also experiment with them on your frag rack by moving it up and down and around. Just be careful, don't do too much too quickly or you can have it go the other way on you.

Btw nice tank.

Thanks for the comments! The bulb is about 5months old, 10k xm. Because of the way I have setup the rock I cant get them much higher. I use to have SPS in there(successfully) but relocated them to the 144g. I thought if anything it would be to much light. I am thinking of replacing the nova t-5 with two strips of 24" CoralSky SL. Right now the mh is in the middle and the 4 t-5s are on the front. The LEDs would allow me to put one in the front and one in the back.

With a MP40 in the tank it wont allow a build up of anything. I just dumped the carbon out yesterday when I did a 20g wc. So nothing on the surface, water is clear, although I will put more carbon in the reactor.

What kind of light cycle do you have. I have my light cycle on 4 hours on, 8 off, etc. During the day when my lights are off, daylight filters into the tank which makes everything stretch a little, but my colors are awesome. Kinda the best of both worlds. Though, I've never seen stretching like that under my conditions. Your tank looks pretty deep though.
Try supplementing with some high powered LEDs (3 watt kind with lenses). Those suckers will stay put. I guarantee it.

It could be your spectrum why are you using 10K is it just for growth? Also as mentioned what is your light cycle? And as a temporary fix you can try moving them up with a tall piece of PVC or something like that just to see if they respond well if so then maybe thats your problem but It seems you have the right depth, and wattage I just wonder if its your photoperiod or spectrum. Also do you feed your corals at all? Did this just suddenly start happening or was it a slow thing?

I put the 10k in because there were sps in the tank. All most all of the sps where removed in put into my other tank. I was not planning on replacing the mh until the 1yr mark. As stated above I have been thinking of removing the t-5s and adding two 24" strips of coralsky sl.
Lighting schedule
actinic- 0700-1900
10k t-5s 0800-1800
250 10k 1000-1600
I feed cyclopeeze, rods original/reef and pe mysis. Nothing directly to the corals. Not even the lps's.
