I was just wondering what the first big mistake anyone had mad with their first tanks.

I just lost all of my fish (not my entire tank though thank the omnipotent one above) and I wanted to make sure I'm not the only one.

Thanks

Many wont admit and thats the biggest problem.

The biggest mistake are low flow, water source , lack of basic setup and rushing the cycle and stock.

If you want to do it right then list all your equipment and water source and water readings and amount of LR and LS?

?

Thats pretty much it in a sentence.

rushing to get the tank completed and fully stocked within 3 weeks, then suffered for 4 month trying to correct my mistake, lost 6 fish and 2 corals in the process

Ill add one huge one to demons list.

TOO MUCH ROCK.

ignore the phooey rule of needing 1.5 lbs per gallon. If you cant get good flow through it it is in your way and defeating its own purpose

poor planning. Once a tank is full of sand, rock, water, equipment, and livestock. realizing that you need to move it about 2 feet is not a good feeling. Before you add water, do a dry run, set everything up and check your positioning, clearances, and leveling (if its not level empty, it most likely won't be wet!)

i started saltwater with NO lights (but they said they were for coral, haha i swear) a 20 gallon tank with 2 mandarins and an anenome. along with a bunch of damsels. the only thing that made it out of there was the rocks

... not doing enough research on lighting & equipment...

I ended up upgrading the lights, the skimmer & powerheads, expensive...
The only good thing was able to reuse the lights on the Fuge...

DO RESEARCH!!!!

My tank had been set up for over six months with no problems. Ich got in though and I have learned the importance of the QT tank.

I rush set up a 35g QT threw the fish in and pppptttt all dead fish in the morning. I'm guessing my problem was too many fish and not enough dissolved O2. Live and learn I guess.
