TTM ammonia question

Apparently my salt mix Kent Marine, mixes up with a fair amount of ammonia in it. Can I use this for TTM? Would dosing prime after mixing up the salt remedy this problem?

My DT is infected with ich so I cant pull "Broken in" water from there. I have a 75 gallon I am cycling currenty that is bare bottom and cant decide whether to try hypo in it. or do TTM to this clean tank.

Are you using RODI water?

sounds like you're using tap water or your rodi filters need to be changed. I haven't heard of a salt mix adding ammonia.

using a 4 stage BRS rodi unit with fairly new filter media. Last time I checked it was 0 TDS.

Maybe I am just getting a false positive from my api test.

Wondering if it would hurt to just dose prime when mixing and then again on day 2.

My other option I've been considering is hypo, but I understand this has its down sides as well.

TTM would still be my preferred method. hypo works (I've used it in the past but it was a short horror story) but to me TTM is the way to go

I use Kents and have never had a problem with ammonia. Also recommend doing TT in conjunction with Prime if needed.

Just an update, I've decided to go with TTM after all.

However, I got a red sea ammonia test kit and still get the same low level ammonia reading at around .2 ppm. So I dont think my API test was false positive after all.

As discussed earlier I am using rodi water.

Should I be ok if I just add prime when initially mixing the water?.

Other option would be to pull water from the newly set up ick free tank I will be transfering fish to after TTM.

Very strange that you are getting ammonia upon initial mixing. How long do you age your water before using, and do you still get an ammonia reading after aging the water?

I do TTM changing every 48 hours. ammonia does not come into play, I can feed a little better and the fish seem to do better.

I've done TTM 3 or 4 times now in 5 gallon buckets. Have never seen any ammonia(their not in the water long enough to be an issue). I do add prime when I initially mix up my water, only because I rinse my buckets with tap water and don't want any trace of chlorine messing me up, but I do this for my water change water also. The way I figure it, prime certainly can't hurt anything, and it's better to be safe then sorry.

I was testing about 48 hours after mixing. Thought maybe it was the old mag 12 I always mix with, but had the same results after mixing up about 15 gallons with a heater and powerhead I had laying around.

If anything I might just use water from the new 75 I just set up to house them in after TTM or I could just add a small dose of prime when mixing water for TTM I suppose.
