Ttm qt setup

Am I correct that I can keep some filter floss in my DT sump

When I want to qt some new fish, I can fill the qt tank with DT water and pull out some filter floss and use it and only it in a cheap hob filter like Rio 110

Then between tank transfers, dry the tank and Hob filter, toss the floss, and when ready to use for the next transfer, fill with dt water, grab another piece of floss out of the sump and put it in hob filter and repeat?

Yes heater and the rest but for filtration will this be a good way to use ttm

In theory yes, in auctality, probably not. What I would be worried about is the Nitrate factory it will most likely become. If you are using DT water, it will be sufficient for one fish in a quarantine. I have no problems. I fill QT with DT water, and no worries.

No filter needed during transfers. The floss idea would help cycle your observation QT after TTM is done (12 days). No need for it before that as ammonia won't spike in 3 days. After TTM, add filter and 4 more weeks of observation.
Hope this helps,
Adam

like mentioned above, you don't need the seeded floss for tank transfer method because one transfer lasts not more than 72 hours. you could use prime after 24 hours if you want to be on the safe side. and you want to use the new water, not the display tank water for both transferring tanks and observing tank especially if the display tank is infected.

Congrats on using TTM / QT! Best investment you can make in the health of your tanks.
I use new filter floss during TTM, but only because I tend to overfeed and don't want the extra stuff in the tank.
I usually add Prime on day 2, even if there is no ammonia.
I DO keep a sponge in my reef sump even though my QT tank is cycled because disease can strike anytime you add a new fish.
I may have to disinfect the QT at some point and want to be prepared to jump start the QT again.

My first time doing TTM was a nightmare, since I had 10 fish that had to go through it.
Let's just say I had not yet learned my lesson.
Now I don't even go to the LFS without a first phase TTM set up and even my wife doesn't complain anymore.... much.

Can you explain this statement, I don't understand which aspect would be a Nitrate factory?

So to summarize the advise here.

Go Buy
2 10 Gallon tanks
2 small hang on the back filters.

During the TTM Phase, using the DT water use no mechanical filter, just monitor for Ammonia or use Prime at the 24 hour marks.

Post TTM for the QT Observation Period, Pull a seeded filter cartridge from my DT Sump and use that with a DT water for a period of 4 weeks. Should I just use a piece a filter floss cut to match the size of the HOB Filter or use something like one of THESE.

I am OK with using DT Water as the object is keep the DT water uninfected.
If my DT was infected with something I wouldn't be adding fish to it.

With one fish in TTM I don't think I have picked up any ammonia. I would not worry about Nitrates in TTM.

For your main QT you can use the floss or the sponges referred to. The sponges are the ones that come with HOB filters. They are at most LFS in the filter areas. Good luck

All the HOB filters I have seen are a combination of Floss filter, carbon, etc.. Those cartridges are of what you speak?

I believe the HOB filters I used were aquaclear filters they had an actual sponge that went into it. I use to get the sponges at Petco for a couple bucks

Thank you for your patience as I am think headed. But have purchased the wrong things to many times in this hobby based on my assumed understanding....

Is 10 Gallon Sufficient for fish that will go in to a 65 gallon tank. Wont be getting any big fish, not bigger than a tang.

I will get 2 of these AquaClear 20 HOB Filters
I will use no filters at all during the TTM Phase, merely using The HOB to provide water flow. Drying between TTM Phases.
During the 4 week QT observation period I will add the carbon, Foam Thing and a seeded BioMax bag from my sump.

In the event the fish needs to be treated for somehting other than ich I would remove the carbon.

Correct?

This. Significant others are somewhat trainable. :love2:

I believe you got it. Just remember like anything the first time you do this it can be a bit stressful but it will be easier the next time around.

One thing I did not mention is I like to use a square colander to transfer the fish. If I remember correctly I got it from Wal-mart in the kitchen aisle.

I do TTM in 5 gallon buckets half full(so roughly 2 1/2 gallons), but al my fish are tiny. My largest being a dwarf flame angel.

I wouldn't bother with the HOB filters during TTM(to many nooks and crannies to make sure is completely dry), just use an airpump and some airstones. Throw out the stones after every transfer.

I have only ever had an ammonia spike when I had 4 small fish in 2 1/2 gallons of water during TTM. I now dose prime after 48 hours even if ammonia is not present(just for my own piece of mind).

2G would be small IMO. no filtration. just airstone and some pvc. i toss the airstone and airline tube after transfer. you'll need two sets of pvc though.
