so I had a few questions to be clear as I will be performing this technique at 5 today with my first fish. what kind of water can I use tap/prime walmart Ro or make a batch of rodi really cold not prefered but can do
I have to 10g with heaters and an air pump with two sep lines I can swap out just really nervous about the water.

i use RODI for mine, but walmart RO should be fine. i don't know that i'd go with tap water, but that's just me. too much weird junk in tap water for my liking.

i preheat mine after mixing before transferring my fish. just set up the new transfer tank the night before the transfer with your heater and air stone in it, then double check the temp in the morning before your transfer. it helps to have the heater pre-calibrated.

out of curiosity, why are you starting your xfer at 5pm today? it should be first thing in the morning.

Interesting, I have not read anywhere that it had to be first thing in the morning. I usually opt not to do it first thing so I can get them moved before hour 72 hits without needing to get up at 3 am to do so. I generally have the fish go in at noon (which is when I end up getting them from FedEx but it works out for me) and then have transfers at 11, 10, etc rather than starting it at 8 am and ending up getting up much earlier.

If it is a stress/light thing I haven't noticed any difference and actually the last two sets of fish that have gone through it with me seemed to do better if the light was turned on immediately after the transfer vs letting it off. I will be interested to hear it there is a very specific scientific reasoning behind the morning.

As far as the water, cheap RO water from Walmart should be fine for fish (obviously you still need to add the salt). I used tap water for a long time with my 55g with the help of a conditioner with no issue. I know everyone is against it, but people do it. The only thing you would probably want to know is what levels of chloramine the source uses (if they use it) and make sure the conditioner is dosed to the needed amount to remove it.

Good luck with your first TTM! It may seem overwhelming at first but once you get through the first transfer it becomes much more smooth.

I use my RO/DI water, but because I make 55 gallons at a time for my ATO and AWC I don't have to make it up specifically for the TTM.

i swear i had read that in one of the threads on here before, but it appears i was mistaken. well, that certainly makes my life a whole heck of a lot more convenient.

yea I'm waiting a few more days I went ahead this morning and started a batch of RoDi making it with my Aquatic Buddy really blows my former LFS said it was a great little worker while it does produce o tds I'm getting something like 1.5 an hour.

Do you know the GPD of your ro membrane? What was the RO/DI output before you started using the Aquatic Buddy? I use it and get improved production with it.

You may be correct and I missed that! I would guess some do that so the lights are off when they transfer maybe to reduce the stress? Hopefully someone can jump in if there is a specific reason other than lights off to start to lower stress because I know I researched a bit but there is no way I hit every single thread in regards to TTM. I love my fish, but getting up for the last flip at 3 am isn't happening :hmm3:

it's 50gpd standard. I must admit the original tank it was supposed to be feeding was a 30 bowfront. I upgraded after the bowfront leaked and had to upgrade all of my toys but the rodi had been used

I usually start mine early afternoon for the same reasons A.Astore mentioned. I figure whatever makes the 72 hour mark the most convenient.

I do seem to recall quite awhile ago there was a thread about starting the them early morning.

I swear I read it at one point a while back in here, worded as something like "do the transfers first thing in the morning but not obsessively so"

I went back and read the thread that's up now and it didn't say anything about early though.

Looking back I never was quite sure why the morning would be important. With artificial light cycles an all.

looks like im surfing on here way too much to remember that lol

That's what I remembered as well.
I usually make the switch like this because I am an early riser: 6:30, 6:00, 5:30.
As long as you stay within 72 hours you should be good.
If I start in the late afternoon, I count that as a full day and add one more transfer step. If the fish make it to the 3rd transfer, one more won't hurt.
