do they need to be buried in sand, or will it be ok to place in rockwork?

They need to be in the sand, and in low flow.

+1 for that. I had two. One came undone and went to the rocks where i thought he could anchor himself. Didn't work and it died a week later/

Thanks for the input guys. I was afraid that was the case...this tube may have to go in my refugium. I think it may be difficult to find (reach) a suitable place in the display. Next time I'll buy a shorter tank :headwalls:
