Tunze 6255 > Vortech MP60

First, I want to give a big THANK YOU to Roger for selling me the 6255 that he had on display at MACNA 2013. Now, I just need find another one with a MACNA discount!

I'll try to make this as brief as possible. Over the years, I've always used Tunze Streams. I've had 6000's, 6100's, and currently two 6105's on my 215 gallon SPS aquarium. If I remember correctly, I only had one very minor issue that was very quickly resolved (awesome customer support).

Recently, I decided to upgrade to a larger aquarium so I began rethinking all of my equipment choices and the whole Tunze vs Vortech debate. I read the forums for hours but I knew the only way I could make up my mind was to try them both out for myself.

First, I tried out two MP40's and wasn't impressed, they were too loud and didn't give me the flow that I would need for a 300 or 400 gallon SPS aquarium. Then I tried out two MP60's and I was amazed at the flow, espically the undertow they produced. However, they were still loud, bulky, and had wires running along the outside of the tank. At this point I really thought that I was going to stay with the MP60's but I wanted to give the 6255 a try and I'm glad I did. In my opinion, the 6255 is far superior for my application than a MP60. The 6255 seems to produce more flow, produces a strong undertow just like the MP60, dead silent, and has a two-year warranty. In my application the 6255 is less distracting than a MP60 too.

I believe the 6255 and MP60 are both great pumps but I prefer the two-year warranty, long term reliability, silence, low maintenance, flow pattern, adjustability, and the aesthetics of the 6255.

If someone is on the fence about a 6255, go for it! I have no regrets and so far it's the best pump I've owned.

Good review. Roger what is the flow pattern of the 6255? And what does adding the 6255 covers to a 6155 do in terms of output and flow pattern?

It basically has the reach of the 6105 with narrow housing (about 7ft) but the spread of the 6155 ( a bit wider). You can add one to a 6155 and the flow will increase due to the lower restriction and spread further in width. It will fit on any of the newer fixed shaft Streams, but cannot be used on the older removable shaft types as their is no socket for the shaft at the front.

Hey Roger,

I'm shipping out a 6105 today... The connector got wet. Hopefully it's repairable. I've included a letter with the pump that explains everything.
