Tunze 9002 skimmer pump dead

I just purchased a slightly used Tunze 9002 skimmer. I have only run the skimmer for a few hours and all of the sudden the pump stopped last night. The impeller and everything is clean. I have never had a pump die on me.

Has anyone had this problem before?

Not sure what it could be.

I would open the pump and check the impeller, a common issue on a pump that has been stored is dried salts and calcium deposits will seize the pump. Another problem can be a broken impeller. What model is the pump? 0800.040 or 1073.008?

The pump is the 8 series pump. The impeller seems to be clean. I do not see anything in particular that would cause a jam or a friction problem. When I plug it in it doesn't even look like it is trying to turn the impeller. The magnet and shaft also appear to be clean as well.

0800.040? You could send the pump in and if it was made less than 2 years ago it would be under warranty. Unfortunately we are out of stock on this pump so it would take a couple weeks to get a replacement. This was the older pump that we replaced with 1073.008 in early 09 and only the old pump fits this older body so the new pump won't work. Premium Aquatics may have them in stock if you wanted to buy a spare in the meanwhile, this pump runs about $40.

Thank you

I ordered a new pump this morning. So much for saving a few bucks by buying a used skimmer. Oh well....

So far I really like the skimmer and think it is a great product.

Thanks, you could certainly send in the old pump so you can have a spare for the future.

Hey Guys

I have another dead pump and it is not even a year old yet. It does not seem to be deposits of any kind causing a jam.

How do I go about getting a new one under warranty?

Thank you

Does the pump make any effort to turn? Are you sure it is not just a broken impeller? It is very unusual to have a pump fail so soon. The most common issue is the impeller seperates from the magnet and the magnet turns without engaging the impeller, this will happen usually if some debris damages the plastic of the impeller. In general for warranty the pump needs to be sent in, the problem is I am in Germany for a meeting at the factory and don't return until the 10th. Please check the impeller and let see what we find, I can probably arrange something with my warehouse manager.
