Tunze 9010 noise problem/

I have a Tunze 9010 skimmer less than six months old. It is skimming fine, but recently about 2 weeks ago started making a ticking sound...tic-tic-tic. Sounds like metal hitting metal. Sometimes it is louder than others. Several times it stopped for a few hours only too return. Now it is pretty steady.

I love the skimmer, but there has to be a simple solution as too what is causing the ticking. Anyone have this problem or have an idea how to fix the noise??

Thanks

My guess would be it is coming form the pump. Likely the bush bearing has come loose and you just need to push it in, or the pump has a dragging brake shoe and cleaning may solve this.

I have the same problem only mine is only 3 weeks old skims great but I get the same ticking noise I took it apart today and it's still as clean as the day I got it. I can stop the noise by closing the air screw but then the skimmer won't skim. So...where is this bush bearing???

If closing the airscrew stops it, I don't think it is the pump. I would guess it is water inside the airline. How do you have it set up? In tank or in sump, if in sump are you using the stand pipe with sponge?

I have it set up in sump with the standpipe and sponge installed. I re-read the instructions last night and I found the bearing bush I took it off and pressed it back in. The noise is a lot less frequent now but is still there from time to time. Water in the airline??? So just pulling the airlines off and reinstalling them should solve this problem?

No, don't pull the airlines off, but if the blue sponge is above the top of the stand pipe or the skimmer is submerged abit too deep water can back up into the air intake system.

The sponge is good about an inch below the top of the standpipe and the water level will fluctuate 5" to 6" between top offs.

I would try one last thing, based on what you describe I think it is just air bubbles popping inside the skimmer or water in the air line, these noises sound like an old percolating coffee maker. Since it follows air adjustment, I don't believe it is the pump. I would however try prying out the bush bearing and reinstalling it rotated 180 degrees, it can only go in two ways. You might test the pump not connected in the skimmer to rule out if the pump is making the noise or the skimmer. If it is just the skimmer and a result of water or air noise, this should subside in another week or two as the pump loses some power from debris and wear. The skimmer is designed to reach its optimum after a couple months, at first the pump is a little to strong, that way you don't have to always take it apart for cleaning to get good performance.
