Tunze 9010

Looking to upgrade my skimmer for a 90 gallon reef tank. I don't know if I have in the room in my sump can it hang on the back of the fish tank.

Thats where mine is. In the back corner of my 90g. Takes up no more room than a typical square corner overflow

How is the noise level for the 9010? I've been considering an upgrade to a 9005 or 9010. I've currently got a Remora w/skimmer box on a 65g. I would be using the 9010 in the tank as well.

Do the 9005/9010 have any ability to skim the surface? How good is the production?

I just set up a reefpack 500 system in my 75G. It is a combination of a 9005 and a Comline filter which will skim the surface for me as well as give me the ability to add mechanical/chemical filtration.

The 9005 Started skimming w/in an hour of set up and overnight I got a 1/2 full cup of stinky tea :). I added 120lbs of LR yesterday and that was all it took to start a nice foam.

I am very impressed with the 9005 so far. I have a 9002 in my 30G tank and it has been running great for the last month.

I think if you have enough flow in the tank to break the surface tension the surface skimming should not be necessary.

Edit: Noise level is very low for how much foam this thing kicks up. You will not be disappointed in either. If you are using a canopy you may wish to consider the 9005 for the shorter cup. Very little headroom necessary.

What are the comparisions of the 9010 to the Deltec MCE600? I do like the ability to switch from in the tank to placing in the sump.

Very little noise. I can barely hear the air being taken in but thats about it. Plus I,m still playing with different air adjusts on mine and have had it set where there was no noise.

No surface skim. The intake is near the bottom of the skimmer, but I have lots of surface turbulance from stream pumps.

With the 9010 listed at 16.8 inches high, is there about 5" that sticks out above the water line, with the remaining 12" actually being in the tank, assuming an in-tank setup?

Flatlander, can you partially hide the 9010 behind a rock pile or does it need to be in the open. It looks like the intake and output are right next to each other, it this true?

You can hide them easily, you just want to make sure you can pull it out for maintenance. I use the 9005 and a Nano Cleaner for surface skimming, just to save a little on room as my tank is small.

Here is a picture of my 9005 skimming on day one:

Can't see in the pic but the skimmate is tea colored.
I am very happy so far with the system.

I could not figure out the osmolator yet. That will be a project for later since I am just curing the rock in the tank now and will be changing the water everyday for the next week anyhow.

FWIW here is what I have thus far:

I have a framed tank and from the top of the frame to the top of the cup is 3.5 in. I would say about 6 in. to the water line or so. I run my water level slightly above the water line mark.

Very easy to hide. As mentioned it needs periodic removal for servicing. No problem with mine, as my open top allows it to be lifted straight up. Depends on your hood clearance.

I never hid mine. I did think of trying it though. I like the Tunze look. Better than a corner overflow. :) And I have easy access to brush it of when needed, to keep coralline or other algae growth off.
I will try grow some bushy type higher growing corals in front of it. :) Thats the same I did for overflows.

In your tank picture is that the 9010 to the left? It looks pretty big.

Nope,

It is a Reefpack 500 system which consists of a 9005 connected by a comline filter/osmolator. It is a little large but once I scape the rock around it I hope to not notice it too much. It doesn't take up much more room than an overflow in the tank.. Well, maybe a little more :)

The Comline filter will allow me to run different filter media in the tank.

Here is a pic and a link to the system:
