tunze 9010

Was planning on getting a Tunze 9010 for a 90 gallon FOWLR. Plan on one russels lionfish, one foxface lo, and maybe one bannerfish. I have been patrolling the Tunze sponser part of this forum, and i have seen many people having problems... Are there any success stories out there from people who own this skimmer? Thanks. Yes! I've had my Tunze 9010 for about 6 months. It produces about a cup of wet skim daily in my 75-gallon reef tank with a 29-gallon sump.

If you want dryer skim, there is the 9015 collection cup ($105.52). Currently, I am trying to dial-in my new foam extraction unit ($95.28).

The Tunze can be configured for either in-tank or in-sump modes. The support on Reef Central Tunze USA forum is excellent with Roger Vitko of Tunze answering virtually every thread.

The reports of problems that I have read deal mostly with incorrect configurations. The Tunze comes with parts for both in-tank and in-sump modes. If the parts are intermixed, the skimmer will not work. The skimmer can be suspended with a bracket or magnet in the in-tank mode but must rest on a firm surface in the sump to seal the bottom plate.

It would be hard to find a better skimmer with its combination of small size, flexibility, quiet operation, and vendor support.

i want it for intank use. This protein skimmer is going to cost as much as my tank and stand combined, so you can understand my concerns... it is good to hear that it does work well though... i would rather spend more money on a good skimmer once than purchase a cheap skimmer many times over again. Thanks. Bunker

It's a great skimmer. I have one on my 60 gallon and out preformed my old euro reef on the same tank. The only problem is that if you don't clean it every day or two it for the most part stops skimming. Other than that a top notch skimmer.

In-Tank & In-Sump Configurations

In-Tank & In-Sump Configurations

If you do not have a sump now but plan one in the future, the Tunze is a suitable skimmer as it will run in either in-tank or in-sump mode. Except for Tunze 9005 users, I suspect that most Tunze skimmers are installed in-sump. I once saw a picture of a 9005 installation. It seemed non-intrusive and looked like a small overflow.

My recommendation for in-tank mode is to keep your aquarium topped off so the skimmer can work with a constant water level. Otherwise, you may need to adjust the air as the water level drops with evaporation.

When installed in-tank, a bottom plate with an open grate is used to equalize the water level inside and outside the skimmer. This means that the water level must be near the “blue line” of the skimmer to allow the foam to reach the collection cup.

In the sump configuration, a vertical exhaust pipe keeps the water level inside the skimmer constant so the sump can have anywhere between 4” and 11” of water. A solid bottom plate replaces the grated plate. This plate must rest with suction cups on a firm surface to “seal” the water inside.

I briefly installed my Tunze 9010 in my sump with a magnet holder but used the in-tank configuration with the grated bottom plate. The low water level in my sump never reached the “blue line” and I could not lower the skimmer enough without the cup hitting the plastic tank rim. The foam could not consistently reach the collection cup. I gave up and reconfigured the skimmer with the in-sump components and placed it on a platform.

You can use the in-sump configuration in your aquarium. However, the vertical pipe may be obtrusive and the skimmer must rest on a platform or a rock with a level top.

I hope that helps. Good luck!

Do the instructions that you discussed PJF come with the skimmer, or should i print out what you posted? Where did you get yours from?... i have only seen it on a few web sites. Bunker

I've got my in-tank on a 40g breeder. Actually I will be taking that tank down soon and won't need that skimmer. It comes with the hanging brackets etc.

Let me know if your interested.

All of the components are press-fitted (no bolts or screws) and everything fits together very well.
