Tunze 9410 skimmer question (Noise)

How quiet are these skimmers running. I believe the 9410 pump is quiet, but what about water return to the aquarium? Do you hear it trickling down the tray to the filter sock? Do you have to use the tray and filter sock, maybe you could put a sponge on the outlet tube?

Thanks in advance.

All needlewheel skimmers make some noise, the rotating impeller is imbalanced by the mix of air and water and vibrates. I think the 9410 though is about as quiet as a needlewheel skimmer will get. Their is some splash noise from water, this will vary with depth of submersion (how far the water falls) as well as how far open the air is, so it is worse when the skimmer is new and the air is more closed off (less air = more water flow). The best remedy is to have a lid on the sump, this greatly reduces how much noise you will hear but requires a deep sump so a lid can cover the skimmer.

I found that in addition to what's already been said WRT having the filter sock holder closer to the sump water surface, and having the air more open if possible, a strip of sponge positioned as shown allows the water to flow down into the sump more calmly, thus almost completely eliminating the dripping noise. Good luck.
