Tunze 9440 or BK 200 mini

Hi Jeremy,

I've been needing to buy a skimmer for my 210G but can't really decide between these two skimmers. Can you perhaps give me some insight as to which you think is better? The only restriction i have is size but both of these are small enough to fit where i want them to.

Currently I'm running a Schuran Jetskim 150 which is skimming quite well, but I'm sure it is quite under powered for my tank size + sump/fuge.

Thanks,
Gabe

Well, do you want a Porsche or a Ferrari? Ok, so really neither skimmer is Italian made, but you get my point.

The Tunze obviously has a little bigger footprint than the Bubble King just because of how the pumps are configured onto the unit and how far the exhaust pipe comes off. The Tunze does pull a little more air with both pumps, at a little higher wattage than the Bubble King. The Bubble King does use a diffuser plate which is greatly going to reduce turbulence, and uses a very large diameter neck, which produces an awesome, stable foam head.

In the end I would say flip a coin. I think the performance edge would probably just lean a little towards the Bubble King, although not by a huge margin. The Bubble King of course has the "sexy factor" going on with it!

Thanks,
Jeremy

Thanks for the response Jeremy. The most confusing part of the equation is really the sizing that Tunze gives their skimmer compared to the BK.

The Tunze is apparently rated for 1057G where as the BK is only for 265G and the number seems to be somewhat scientifically derived since it is accurate down to the last significant digit. Do you know how to interpret this number?

Thanks,
Gabe

Unfortunately there really is no "magic number" or anything like that I am aware of. Obviously Tunze has used some type of formula, but in my opinion I think real world experiences are better served in this instance.

I can tell you that I would not put that Tunze on a tank that is 1057gal, nor do I recommend that you do the same. At the same time, I would most certainly feel comfortable running the BK 200 Mini up to about 300 - 350gal moderate to heavily stocked and feel very confident with it.

I hope this helps to answer your questions.

The apparant accuracy of their numbers is misleading. The numbers come from the conversion of litres to gallons. The BK is rated up to 1000 L and the Tunze is rated to 4000L. As Jeremy stated take those numbers with a grain of salt.

You would want to use the same standard we apply to the Comline skimmers

Rating is for a basic soft coral tank or FOWLR
Deduct 20% for LPS and more intensive soft coral tanks
Deduct 40% for SPS
Deduct 60% for SPS with a high fish population density.
