Tunze arrangement advice

I’m in the process of an upgrade and building the wood tank below. The tank will be SPS dominant and barebottom. I wanted to ask for advice on organizing my Tunze throughout the tank.

As you can see from the drawing, I’m planning on having 2 external waveboxes on the one end (I’ve never done these before, so if there is any problem with their arrangement or any suggestions to make them more efficient, please let me know). I will also have a closed loop along the back with a Reeflow Barracuda connected to an OM 4-way. I intend to have the outputs pointing downward to create a circular flow from back to front in order to keep the bottom clean of detritus.

I currently have 7 x 6100’s, and 2x6200’s and considering buying 2x6300’s and need to figure out the best way to place them. I have a Profilux controller that I want to use to control all the Tunze pumps.

My current plan is to put a 6100 in each corner on a DIY Wavysea type device to rotate them 90 degrees. If I were to buy the 6300’s, I thought that I would put those in the front corners (point across to the opposing back corner) and put a 6200 in each back corner pointing to the opposing front corner in order to get a good push (turbulence) going diagonally across the tank. I’d. How does this plan sound so far?

So, that would leave me with 3 more 6100’s. What should I do with those or is what I have suggested so far enough? I personally don’t think you can have too much flow (e.g., I have 2x6200, 6x6100, and closed loop Amp Master 3000 on my current 150 gallon, and the tank is doing great!).

I don’t want to see a bunch of the Tunze pumps across the back (as I currently do in the 150G). In the original plan, I will already have two Tunze visible in each back corner. The front corner isn’t going to be an issue since the viewing area is just over 6” in from the sides, which should hide the front pumps quite well. Maybe I could hold off on the others until my corals grow enough to hide them across the back [if there is agreement that the 2x6300’s, 2x6200’s, 4x6100’s (on swivels), Barracuda on CL, and 2 x waveboxes is sufficient flow]. Upon reading it again, it sure sounds like a lot! :)

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,

Steve

Hello Steve, we have pretty much the same size tank except mine is 12" shorter. Anyhow, 2 tunze 6301 or 6305 on the front, 6201 in the back flow across the tank will take care of the top flow portion. I would use at least 4 6100 evenly space out along the bottom in the back flow toward the front. but I am not sure if you are planning on a sand bed. I don't think you will need the CL with all the tunze that you have in hand.

I am going to use 6 tunze 6305 in my new tank, 4 on top and 2 in the bottom along with 4 tunze wavebox.....

As for the DIY tunze holder you can do something like this....

I can't remember, do you make these, or did you get them somewhere?

Hi Steve, thank you so much for the reply and advice. I have been following your thread and LOVE the Tunze holders that you’ve built. I will definitely be using a version of those on my build (with credit to you, of course!).

Wow, 6 x 6305 is going to be amazing. I’m stoked to see someone that appreciates MASS flow like I do. All my mates in my reefing club think that I’m a flow freak.

My tank will be barebottom, so no worries about sand storms. In my 150G, I have 2 x 6100’s pointing downwards along the back wall, and it does a great job of keeping the bottom clean, but don’t like the look of them across the back in plain view. So, I was trying to accomplish the same with the CL, but being less noticeable/obtrusive in the tank. That is, all the nozzles will be pointing downward to create a sweeping flow from the back to the front in order to “sweep” the bottom clean.

I could just sell off my old style Tunze and replace with the nice smaller versions, but that’s going to be a hard sell to the wife.

How were you planning on arranging the 2x6305’s on the bottom of your tank… in the bottom corners pointing kitty corner in order to sweep the whole bottom? I’d like to just use my other 6100’s in some configuration along the bottom as well, but didn’t know how to deal with the cords so that they weren’t an eyesore. What are your plans for dealing with the cords?

You are planning on having 4 x waveboxes on your tank. Given that our tanks are the same size, do you recommend me expanding the boxes and doubling up similar to yours? I saw your video and the wave action that you are getting is awesome. Will my wave be quite small with only 2 x waveboxes?

Thanks again for your help!

My tank is peninsula style which have one black panel. The two pump in the bottom will be mounted approx 6" from the corner and flow straight across the 8 foot length of the tank. The tunze 6305 can easily cover 36" width on each pump. As for the wire as long as i keep it black, it can easily blend in with the black panel. I will run it behind the rock work so you can only see approx 6" of wire.

I am going to keep the 4 waveboxes running but i will turn it down a bit because my tank will look funny with 4-5" of wave. You can easily achieve 2" of wave with 2 tunze waveboxes. I decided to do 4 because of my curiosity .

Since you have so many 6100 laying around, i will line them up along the bottom and flow toward the front. Make sure your aquascape is sturdy :D. You can hide the wire by using 1/2" gray or black pvc pipe, cut a slit along the pipe and tug all your wire inside the tube.

If you have 8 pumps, this is what i would recommend.

4 6100 across the 8 foot length in the bottom of the tank flow toward the front on channel 1a and 2b via Y adapter.

2 tunze 6301 or 6305 and 2 tunze 6201 will be on channel 2a and 2b. Make sure you stagger the pumps and they are not point directly at each other or else you will have a little tornado spinning in the middle of your tank :D.

Controller setting will be interval II, 1.5s pulse for 30 sec. The power will go from 30%-100%.

By doing that, the channel 1a and 1b responsible to kick off the detritus and create a circular motion from the back to the front. Channel 2a and 2b will be pushing the detritus around and create turbulence flow... I hope you are still with me :D
