Tunze DOC 9005 in 30g + sump

I was pointed towards this skimmer. I have a 30g FOWLR tank and a 10g sump (soon to be replaced with a 10-15g refugium). I was looking for a skimmer that would work well but also have a small foot print.

I was looking at the Coralife 65g model for $90. It has a small footprint of 6.25" X 5.5". The Tunze has a smaller footprint but the cheapest I could find the 9005 is $250! Does it really do THAT well for the price. The only other unit I was looking at in that price range was the Euroreef, which I have used in the past and loved but with a 9X9 footprint, would be hard for in sump usuage since my refug will only be a total 13X13" unit.

I have seen many people who have the 9010,9015,and 9020 and they seem to be happy but I didn't know if the low end 9005 would cut it and work as well at skimming.

Do you think it's worth the price (I know the higher models are, I'm speaking purely of the 9005 in my small setup). I'm just uneasy about spending over twice as much compared to the small footprinted Coralife unit. Thank you in advance!

The 9010 will be the way to go for in sump use. The 9005 comes equipped only for in tank use and to use it in sump you need the extension kit which is another $50 so it just makes no sense when you get a bigger pump and stronger skimmer for a few dollars more. I can't answer for Corallife, I have never used one.

Thank you. Now I just need to decide which route to go. Since the Coralife one is only a slightly bigger footprint, does in sump and out and is 1/3 the price :-/

But thank you for the tip on the 9010

It is normal for water to exit the hole in the back. This water forms a seal to push the foam out the cup and it exits from this hole to keep it from building up too much. Is it running normally otherwise?

Ciao Roger,

i will install today and i revert, because i stopped everything when i found the hole problem...

thanks for you replay

i let you know as running asap
