I'm setting up for a 180g without sump and interested in getting the Tunze DOC Protein Skimmer 9015 but have a quick question. The tank is 72X24X24 and thinking of getting T5 with 6 bulbs for light then realize I need room to account for the collection cup...with this setup do I have enough room for the collection cup to clear? What is the minimum height the skimmer will come up above the tank? I will probably need to place the skimmer in the back and the light as close to the front as possible.

Thanks for your input before I go out place the order for the light and skimmer.

You would need an opening with a diameter of 6.25", including the cup 7" will be above the water line.

Roger,

Thanks again for the info. Any major difference bet the 9010 and 9015 besides the foam extractor? I would love to spend some time to do my own research but I'm a bit tight on time as I want the skimmer to be delivered this week.

The 9010 and 9015 only differ in the cup which allows you to up the air flow through the skimmer. The 9010 and 9020 collector will cost the same as a 9015, it should perform slightly better and allow you to do what you want.

One solution for your T5 lights is to run a pair of lights that are shorter than the rest to create a "gap" for the skimmer. I've got a 36" tank and am using 3 36" T5's and 2 24" T5's so I will have space for a 9010 in the near future.
