Tunze Master DOC 9460 skimmer

Hi All,

Just wanted to sharee what I believe is a great new skimmer. I had some hard times hit the end of last year due to my wife loosing her job and I had to sell my H&S 250 2x1260 to help out. When the time came when I could afford to replace it I wondered what I should get. I have always loved the H&S line and their customer support via Fins Reef so I checked out their web site and noticed I could buy Tunze through them as well. I had heard of the new Master DOC skimmers coming out so I talked to Brian and asked if he could get me a 9460. He said no problem. He contacted Roger and he said to hold off until the first of the year as they would be coming out with their own line of skimmer pumps and they would be slightly cheeper than the original pumps offered....as well as less energy consumption and noise.

I waited for probably a little over a month and got anxious and asked Brian if Roger had recieved the new pumps. Roger said "not yet". I was getting nervous with my tank running on a very undersized Tunze 9005 on my 350gal system and water parameters were reflecting that. In the end what happened is Roger suggested he could sell me a 9460 w/ the old pumps and replace them when the new ones came in. Here is the final result. i have the filter socks but don't have much experience w/ them as I have been pretty happy w/ the voerflow tubes w/ the blue sponges. When the new tunze pumps were new they flowed alot of water but they calm down after a few days and the drainpipe/blue sponge combo is very quiet.

The new Tunze pumps are extremely quiet. I have used many other high end skimmers and these pumps are easily as quiet or more than any other I have used w/ maybe the least watt to air injection ratio. I don't have a kill-o-watt meter so I am going off the reported energy consumption but I have no reason to not believe what is reported as Tunze has been incredible to deal with on this skimmer.

Here is some pictures and a video of the skimmer running. I'm not sure what the clicking sound is but it is coming from the camera and you don't hear it while you are recording. The video is pretty poor quality but you can tell the skimmer is very quiet and has a huge foam head and you may be able to see the bubbles are all consistently very small.

Great skimmer, Thank You Roger/Tunze and Brian/Fins Reef for all the assistance :D .

Oh sorry, when you get your new 9420 pumps can you do another review on them I know of a lot of people who are waiting for the revised new pumps to hit the market again.

This is the latest version Tunze pump. I got the first gen. Tunze pump and the air intake was a bit low on the 9460/80 body. Not sure if the 9420/40 bady had the same issues or not. Roger swapped out the pumps and sent me the new version tunze w/a larger dia. pinwheel and maybe a ouple other design changes on it.

So to be clear I have had the sicce pump, the first gen tunze and now this latest version on this skimmer. This latest version is fantastic, absolutely silent w/ a air draw somewhere around 800lph and a power consumption of reportedly 16w. This would be a total of at least 2300lph air and 48w of power.

thanks I heard that new version had problems, very low air numbers and that Tunze had to redesign them again.

They already did that....as far as I know they did'nt change the pump .... they changed the needlwheel and now it is pulling as rated. The first generation tunze pulled massive air but did not hold up well against the backpressure created by the body. This pumps has does not have any issue w/ backpressure.
