Tunze or Vortec

I have a choice between

Tunze Nano Wavebox or Vortec Mp40 ?

Wich is best ?

Tank size 600 litres (1200x650x650)

Also will be running a CLS with 2x OR6500 and Return OR 3500
 
I had tunzes some time ago, and i liked them really well for the most part. I think the major plus is that you can direct them where you want them, and the minus is that they are huge. They also made a slight hum with the different speeds of the pump. Not sure if vortech does this. If i go with powerheads again im going to try vortech, but for now the current plan is to use a closed loop and a wavebox.
 
well i have used both and honesetly they are not the same type of pump. The Tunze is more direct flow where the Vortech is really spread really wide flow.... so 3k GPH from a Vortech will not be the same as 3k GPH from a Tunze..... I hope that helps.
 
I would go vortech. Tunze seems to hold up better, but vortech is superior IMO, and the customer service is supposedly excellent if you have any troubles. I really like to different settings the vortech offers and the ability to make waves.

I have MP40 in my 144gl half circle and really love it. I have it set to lagoon mode and it really give alot of flow even if I have it turned down to 80%
 
i prefer vortech over the tunze just for the extra control and no heat issues because the motor is outside the tank.

Are you running the vortech alone or are you using other powerheads as well? I am trying to decide if i'd need more than 1 mp40 in my 72. I don't like the idea of spending a ton of money on a fancy powerhead and have to keep my bulky koralias in there as well.
 
I ran a tunze wavebox with my vortech for awhile just because I missed the wave action that It used to give my corals, but I eventually just took it out and run pure reefcrest mode now inside my tank, and I prefer it that way...the box is just far too big an eyesore for more
 
The advantage that I see with the Vortech is the battery backup, as it could save your tank. I didn't need the flow, as I have external pumps with Seaswirls, however, I put one in each tank for the backup only.
 
There are lots of alternative battery backups though aren't there? I thought for about half the price of a vortech you could get a battery that looks similar to a car battery that could run all your pumps for days.

I think you mean an inverter. However, if you are not home to hook it up or your tank goes out while you are asleep, it won't do you any good because you have to run it. The Vortech kicks on automatically.

I also have a Smart UPS 2000, however, it only runs my pump for 6 hours.

Oh, I didn't realize they couldn't be hooked up to kick on in case of a power outage. Hey any reason to get a vortech right :D I can hear the words i'll say to my wife "but honey I neeeeed it, you don't want everything to die when, no if, but when the power goes out do you?" LOL

Tunzes have a connector that allows you to connect them to any 12v trickle charged battery for backup power. It allows you to choose the size battery you see fit, as opposed to one size for all.

You can do the same with the Vortechs. Any 12V battery with a float charger will work.
 
i prefer vortechs--it's hard to beat their flow and wavemaking abilities.

that being said, the tunze will probably last longer.

unfortunately the vortechs aren't as long lasting as the tunzes, but i'd still definitely go with the vortechs.
