Tunze or vortech for me?

I have a tall 150 gallon 48L x 24W x 30T mixed reef tank(more lps then anything else) currently I have 4 hydor koralia 750s and my return for flow. The tank is visible on both sides and the front and I access the back and top by going into a sound proofed closet

If I go with vortech both the pumps will have to be on the back wall of my tank since my outlets are all back there. Since I can't aim them I'm worried about dead spots. I found someone selling new mp40 for $415 including shipping. So to get two would be $830 for up to 6400 gph

If I go with tunze I think i would get a 6095 and a 6105 for $610 for about 5950 Gph. Or 2 6105s for $690 And 6870gph. I could run the cord along the top of the tank and have them mounted on the two sides of the tank facing towards each other and direct one a little towards the from and the other at the back and possibly eliminate dead spots better.

Is it possible/worth the thought to run 1 of each? Vortech on the back near the side and a tunze on the other side of the tank, or should I pick a brand and go 100% with it?

I know I won't be bothered or notice the noise of the vortechs since they'll be in the sound deadened closet and I like the look of no cords. Not having heat from a powerhead enter my tank doesn't mean anything to me since I have to run a heater all the time anyway.
I'm planning on buying a reef keeper elite controller to run either option. Since I won't have to include the cost of buying the tunze controller into my decision I think it tips me towards preferring the tunze over the vortech.

Wow 4 750's huh, I use 2 750's in my 29g.
Sounds like having both could prove to be pretty useful for hitting those dead spots but would start with a mp40 myself.
Tunze -reliable, directional, also controllable, wires in tank.

Mp40- -reliable enough, not directional, way more controllable, no wires or heat in tank.

Does anyone really use more than a couple of modes on the ecotech ?

Yeah, I'm at about the minimum 20x turnover now.
If I use an mp40 and a 6105 what advantage would that give me over using 2 6105s?

Do you have apex? Tunze are very versatile with apex controller. A 6095 can easily move water 4 ft away. I have 6095s in a 90g and with 1 on I can get wave action on other side of tank. I have never owned vortexes but love tunze. I too had 4 koralia 750s. 1 6095 moves more water than all 4 combined. Although I did keep 2 koralia in back bottom of reef.

I have a mp40 and a mp10 in my 92 corner and like them. The only downfall I've seen that they don't have is the ability to direct / point then in different directions and with the tunzee products you can

I have a pair of MP10's in my cube. They do just fine, I have had no issues with them and as long as they are lower than 75%, the noise is not too distracting most of the time as I run them in lagoon or reef crest. But the main reason I got them was to save space, and if my tank was any larger I would change over to Tunze in a heartbeat.

I have two MP40's and one 6095 in my 120g 48x24x24 The MP40's put out great flow but as said above you can't point them. I have two corner overflows and found it very hard to get the mp40's flow into certain areas.

Look into the Jebao WP-40 as well. I have 2 MP-40s, and I just replaced them with the WP-40s. They move just as much water, and have wave modes, for $105 per pump. They look just like the Tunze pumps.

Just one of them can make a large wave in my 6ft 125 gallon, which is even more than a single MP-40 could do.

I don't have a controller yet but am going to be buying a reef keeper elite.

I saw the Jebo Wp40 earlier today. I can get 2 of them for $215 including shipping and they flow 3420 Gph each.
Just when I narrow it down to 2 options I find more. What's the deal with these? They are way way cheaper, what would I be losing out on to save the money?

They don't sync between each other like 2 MP-40's would, and they can't be controlled by a reef controller like an Apex... yet.

If I just used the W1 wave mode on it, I could easily just use one pump. Two of these pumps in that wave mode is way too much movement for my 125.

They are Tunze knock off pumps. We will see where they go as far as quality and longevity. Warranty support on Tunze pumps is 2 years, and great service to back them up. Not sure of the warranty on these WP40 or what there service is like. To some its worth the gamble....

imho , No way the K-750s move that much water. [I have the Evo750][And the older K-3s]

My vote is Tunze 6095 for mixed. But the 6105 isn't much more and will have more grunt if needed. Mostly because of your intended mounting on the back wall.

I have a Mp40, 6095, and 6105 both on controller. IMO Tunze pumps are better simply because flow direction, and flow distance. My MP40 does not reach very far in terms of distance. I can get about 3 feet at best out of mine.
However, what I love about my MP40 is that I have 2 battery back ups for it so I feel covered. Now, Tunze does offer this as well via safety connector, but its not as "pretty" as the Vortec back up/

The 6095 is an awesome amazing pump the produces full powerfull flow that is just as wide as the 6105, but the best thing about it is that it is small.

IMO get tow 6095's

I also want to add that my 6105 can easily reach the entire length of my 6 foot long tank and with vigor. My 6095reached 6 feet as well.

Biggest difference is reliability, maintenance, and noise level. Vortez is cool but a PIA in maintenance/reliability/noise. Vortex has awesome flow but was too noisy, required too much maintenance, and was simply not as reliable as I have experienced with Tunze. I have run several vortex and Tunzes for over 2 years. I sold all my vortex pumps and have run 3 Tunzes for over 2 years with not a single issue.

I found myself rebuilding the wet side of my Vortex pumps ever year to minimize noise and stalled pumps.

I'm running three tunze 6095& an Mp40. Get the best of luck both worlds. Love the variable flow on the mp but prefer the tunze for aim and silence.

Since you don't have a controller, save a bunch of money and try thr Jebao WP40 (or wait a month or two and get the WP25 when they come out). I've had a WP40 in my 180g tank for 2 weeks now and it great. I just visited a friend with an MP40 and my WP40 is quieter. Think about it... $465 for 1 MP40... $345 for 1 Tunze 6105... or $115 for a Jebao WP40 and new variable output power converter. If the WP40 runs for a year you are probably ahead of the game! You could buy 1 a year for 3 years and break even, and 2-3 years down the road, who knows what new stuff will be out there.

They don't sync between each other like 2 MP-40's would, and they can't be controlled by a reef controller like an Apex... yet.

One WP40 is enough in my 180g. I'm waiting (I 've heard May) until the WP25 comes out and then I'll get 2.

It's 1/3rd the price... "to some it's worth it?" To most it's worth it. To some who already spent $345 on a Tunze or $465 on a Vortec it's not. I'll buy a spare, still save 33% and don't give a hoot about warranty! It's a hundred bucks, compared to $345 or $465... it's Chinese... it's a throw away. :debi:
