Tunze Pump 1070.040 problem

I recently purchased (within 1 to 1.5 weeks) both the 1070.020 and the 1070.040 pump from socaltropicalfishoutlet. The noise/vibration/hum from the 1070.040 is quite a bit louder. I do understand that it is pumping more water, but it's noise level has made me use my backup Hydor L45 instead.

I Did leave it in a slight vinegar bath for about 40 hours. I also did try to open up and re-set the impellar, but the magnet was a bit too strong, and I did not want to break anything.

The magnet is a rare earth magnet and it will take a strong pull to remove it. Please check this first, check that the shaft is not broken. Also, check the color of the impeller blades and that the front plate over the impeller that holds the bearing is in place. The impeller blades should be a whitish color.

I couldn't find the camera, but I did remove the impeller. The shaft is not broken. Everything is white: the impeller blades, shaft, and plastic housing around the magnet. When I replaced the impeller into the housing, there seemed to be a LOT of wiggle room, but I'm not sure if it was meant to be that way.

Afterwards, I let is run in a tub overnight and checked it this morning. It's still very loud.

It should have very little side to side wiggle room, it sounds like the one or more of the ceramic bushings is missing. On page 16 of your manual please check that you have the part labeled 3 and the red rubber sleeved ceramic bushings on part 2, one inserts at the base of the pump and the other in part 3, it has to be either a missing bushing or missing part 3 and I can get whichever one sent ASAP.

I downloaded the manual. I don't recall seeing Either of the 2 Red rubber sleeved ceramic bushings on part 2. I really do need to take a picture don't I? Anyhow, I remember that when I removed the impeller, there was something slightly red (like a washer) inside of the pump housing where the impeller should sit. Will check more on this later tonight.

The bushings stay in place one in the bottom of the motor, one in the part labeled 3. If part 3 is there, we can be pretty sure you just need a new part 2.

OK, the problem is not from missing the red rubber sleeved ceramic bushings. I opened up both my good pump 1070.020 (LEFT side)and the "bad" pump 1070.040 (RIGHT side).

Now, when I replaced the impellers, i noticed that there was a difference in how the impellers were seated. with the good pump, the impeller stayed in the center with very little wiggle room. BUT with the bad pump, the impeller had a LOT MORE wiggle room. In fact the impeller would 'stick' to the sides. I have tried to show this in the last two pictures where the impeller is first sticking to one side, then a picture of it sticking to the opposite side.

The easiest way to see this is to save both of these pictures and flip back and forth between the two. If you just look at the two pictures side by side it is difficult to see the difference.

i have a 1070.04 as return, and it doesnt even produce a noticeable hum when running. Sounds like your going to get sorted, tunze backup superb, even in SA

my tunze 1073.04 makes a rattling noise as well. It stops if I touch the adjustment dial. I tried putting a long zip tie around the unit to silence it, but this is only a temporary solution. ideas?

I'll be honest, Roger's reputation preceeds him. I think everyone on the board knows that if you have a Tunze issue, Roger will help. Heck, it is at least half of the reason I buy the products....
