Tunze vs The Big Boys!!!

Probably not, it depends what your standards are, in terms of reliability and silence and compact size it has a lot of advantages but certainly a bigger skimmer with a bigger pump can do more. The 9015 is very impressive though given it is so small.

Depending on exactly which Deltec you are comparing, that Tunze will cost quite a bit less too.

Roger, is there any way to rig the Tunze up for an external application or does it have to be in tank/sump?

We have tried to make an external skimmer in the past and what we always run into is two hold ups. First, having a big pump hanging in the tank and the return tube tends to take up about as much room and it looks ugly. Second, the risk of leaks or overflowing seems unavoidable. As a result we have never made a production hang on.

Hi,

I have both Deltec and Tunze skimmers. The Tunzes are pretty compact. The only comparable skimmer in the Deltec line is the MC500 or the MCE600 which I also own. The Deltec is able to generate darker skimmate and finer bubbles compared to a 9010/9015 however the Tunze is able to produce more skimmate - it tends to skim wetter at maximum air input with the foam extractor.

Roger has Tunze tried a needlewheel impeller in the Hydrofoamer pump?

Yes, that was the original plan. It doesn't work. The skimmer is so small that it eventually becomes a big air bubble as air slowly builds up and the pump chokes and it stops working, it works awesome for a day or two. Also, the Tunze pump doesn't really have a suitable design for a needle wheel as it is shaftless and water is what suspends and acts as a bearing for the magnet, air bubbles make a big problem for that design. We worked on the DOC skimmer for over 2 years, we tried just about everything.
