tunze vs. vortech

i cant decide whether to get the new tunze 6105 w/ the 7095 controller or the vortech mp40s ...pros and cons pls. comment thanx

Check out the tunze 7096 controller, it will be available in March. It's $100 less than the price of the of the 7095. From what I understand you can individually set up each power head and or wave box on your computer using a usb connection.

The flow on the vortech's is much wider and natural. The tunzes send out a compact stream of water. Had a full blown tunze setup and sold it for Vortechs, best move I have made with my tank. In my opinion the Tunzes looked too bulky in my 120 as they take up lots of space.

Some people will say they are loud but it depends on your system. I can't hear them over the fans on my light fixture or skimmer. If you are striving for a completely dead silent system you may have an issue with the noise.

I have one Vortech on my 120 Gallon and am very impressed with the flow. It seems pretty quiet to me. Someone said it sounds a little like a cat purring, I would agree with that analogy.

Would a single MP40w on one end of the tank and either a modded Tunze 6025 or MJmod be enough on the other side of a 75 gallon tank?

had tunzes and just recently switched to the vortechs. The tunzes were much more quiet than the vortechs, but the vortechs do produce a much wider flow. i think either way you can't loose since they both produce mass amounts of flow, its more of a personal preference. For me, I just wanted to try something different and I'm happy with my decision on the switch.

Ive heard that the new tunze stream 2 has the wider output nozzle that people have used from the 6200 on the 6100 for some time to spread the flow out.

so perhaps this will change soon, hopefully.

If you want wider flow from a Tunze you can have it. The stock outlet on the 6100/6101/6105 is 50mm. You can change the front cover to one from the higher flow models to get a 63mm outlet size. This is ~ 2" Vs 2.5". You can have either a longer reach or wider flow. I run a 6101 with a 6201 front cover and it srill flows the length of a 6' tank nicely.

I have 2-6105's running right now, as well as a Vortech MP40w Im trying out again.
Size/appearance: The in tank size of the Vortech is about half the length of the Tunze 6105, with the width being similar. Overall length inside and out is also very similar, with the Tunze being slightly longer. The Tunzes are easily tucked in the back corners and pointed towards the tank, where the Vortech needs to be more in the center of the sides to operate best. The Tunze 6105 cords stick out a bit far on the pump, but are not too noticeable in the back, they can also be ziptied to the magnet to reduce appearance. The Vortechs are obviously not in the tank, but can be seen on the outside.

Build/Quality: Both are built very well, and I consider them both high quality pumps. The "C"-clip(weak point on early nanostreams)is very solid on the Tunze, and holds the pump securely. The impeller housing also fits on ALOT better then the Nanos did, it feels alot more solid. The Vortech also has a great build, with no flimsy parts, and everything locks tightly together.

Flow: Out of the box, the Vortech has a much wider flow than the 6105's narrow, longer stream. It is gentle, and moves the whole 2 feet of my tank. The 6105 is a bit more powerful and narrow, but would need to point away from coral. I put 2 of the 6205 housings on my streams, and, as SJM pointed out above- they greatly widen the flow-although these cost an additional $50 each. With those housings on, the flow is very comparable to the Vortech. The undertow is visible with both pumps, more so with the wider flow.

Noise: This is one of my high priority areas- I have a very quiet system due to a basemant sump. I was suprised at how loud the 6105s were out of the box. One quieted down within a few weeks, and one went to Roger(Tunze) who relaced the pump due to a burr. After the other quieted down, I still don't find it as quiet as the older streams, but in the tolerable range. I ended up adding felt to the bumpers(pads on magnet) to reduce vibration, which helped.
Ive always found Vortechs to be "loud", I tried this third one to see if it had improved over previous ones. So far, this current one, although only running several days, sounds similar to the past ones. The noise is a whirring from the dry side(motor)-Being out of the water, this is unavoidable. This noise would very easily blend into an average setup, or if you do not have sensitive hearing/or dont mind a little noise.

**Again, I am not the norm when it comes to noise. I have AMAZING hearing, and all my equipment is in the cellar. I even find the fans on my Powermodule to be borderline annoying, and those are described as near silent.

I dont feel like touching on price, that is eaily researched. I cannot comment fairly on controllability since I am only using one Vortech.

After that babble- I'd add that I am most likely going to stick with the Tunzes due to noise. If it were not for that, I'd have a difficult time deciding between the two.

Also like to add about service. Ive only dealt with Roger, and his service is fantastic. From what Ive read since Vortechs came out, there service is also top notch- they fully stand behing their products, both old and new. I would not worry about customer service problems from either.

Thanks for your post. The 6105s are new and I haven't seen a whole lot of info yet. I have seen a few posts that the 6105 is not as quiet as the previous generation Streams, which is a shame. I also think the wire coming out the front of the pump compared to the back like the older model is a step back.

LOL that your equipment is in the "cellar". I'm from CT originally, so I know what that means. Here in VA, my equipment is in the "basement" ;)

Thanks Scott. I've been wanting to replace my stock 6101 suction housing with a 6201 for a wider flow. I check the Tunze part list and found the part numbers and 2009 pricing for those who are interested in the Tunze 6101 wide flow upgrade.

Suction Housing - Part# 6200.130 ($51.61)
Protective Grating - Part# 6212.200 ($11.03)

I own 3 vortechs that have all been back for service and their customer care is top notch. I always got them back in a matter of days. The first generation was pretty loud, but the newest ones are very quiet.

The pumps are amazing if you don't like cords in your tank.

I found the look of the Vortech power cords on the outside of the tank much more noticeable than the Tunzes inside. This will depend on how and where your pumps are mounted and the viewing angles of your tank.
