Wavebox

Wavebox

Thats what I thought before I saw one in operation at Fishtown USA. Try calling them and make sure they still have it setup in a coral display tank. Last weekend I saw it there in a reefready 6ft long tank with two overflows. I believe the tank was either a 180 or 220. But to my suprise it worked really well . I think seeing is believing in this case. Might be worth the trip. I haven't seen it setup in anyother stores tanks yet.

I'm def going to try to get out there, but it's a hike for me. Thanks for all the info, I might end up skipping the closed loop and going with the wavebox if i can afford it.

The questions is, if i build my overflow box 1" from the top of the tank and add the wavebox will the water splash out of the tank?

i think it has to do with how high or low you set the wavebox in the tank. as long as the wavebox is x amount of inches from the top of the tank, then that will keep the wave from splashing out of the tank.

I'm thinking i will build the canopy to hang down enough to cover it up. I also dont like the idea of having the box in the tank. I like getting as much equipment out of the tank as possible. However, This looks like the best wave action you can get right now. I might drill for a closed loop just in case then plug it if i don't use it.

I saw the Tunze Wavebox at Fishtown USA last weekend in the 6 foot coral tank....That thing is cool! Due to the length of the tank you could see the wave curl from one end to the other. My wife told me I should definitely get one. I am going to listen to my wife's wise words of wisdom and pick one up...Fishtown doesn't stock them...Takes about 3 weeks as it comes from Tunze overseas. Price wasn't bad though (I think around $530) and includes the wavecontroller.

Worth checking out..

mclc26, check out our LIRA vendors such as JCAquatics & Reefexotcs for pricing, they have FishTown beat,
also, that "bluething" in you gallery is a "black limpet", its a pest.

you should have no problem if you will customize the tank by placing the overflow in the fulcrum/axis of the water curl = middle of the tank where the level will change to a minimum, by placing the overflows closer to the edges you have "splashing" or "surging" into your overflow.

so far Im still happy with my Sea Swirls.

what is it with this hobby, its so freakin expensive but we still find away to cut into our childrens College funds & wifes wallets!

I have my overflows notched deeper to accommodate high return flow. I would suggest you order normal and can always add half inch if needed (assuming acrylic teeth). My wave is only about an inch, maybe 1.5. thats 2x wavebox on a 375. I could get it cranking a bit higher if I put them on opposite ends, but i like it better this way.

I would recommend euro bracing, both to remove any risk,of splash but also to strengthen tank. the wave action stresses end seams.

that being said, i love LOVE the action generated by them. it makes the tank, imo, and the coral and fish love it. I would not want to see the top of the water though, so make sure canopy comes down far enough.

lastly, drill for a closed loop. If you go full sps you will want it. I'm bummed I didnt do it when I had the chance.

I'm getting the tank from glass cages in a few weeks with eurobracing on the front and 2 sides, and i'm going to add my own overflow. I was going to go coast to coast horizontal, i thought about external but the tank was starting to get too far from the wall. You think a 36" overflow is a bad idea if I plan on adding a wavebox someday?

Yeah i did see the DIY and i'm seriously considering it, but all that electronics scares me.

I'll probably wait on the wavebox, but i want to know that it will be an option to add it a year from now. Thanks for all the info

I read the thread, & the guy is planning on the Tunze mod, at that price point might as well spring for the box itself. he said the MJ might not take th switching for too long.

I live off of locust right across from the baseball fields. Right now I'm working at sachem as a leave replacement for earth science, but it ends in a month. Where i'm going from here i have no idea. What about you?
